So hott.

Oh, totally... I mean, I understand Podcasting, but I haven't followed it at all so I don't know the tech behind it, so the enclosure tag doesn't mean all that much to me...

(I guess podcasting pretty much RSS 2.0 feeds supplying your iPod/mp3 player with some audio...)

Didn't I just talk to you about this a couple of days ago and you commented on how lame this was? Oh, and the space issue...

Still, so how is one going to put in a get sounding podcast unless you let people email (or be geeky and let them dial in via SIP to your server)?
Can you pull a particular rss feed of just podcasts from a journal?

Some sort of tagging of entries so that you can set up specific RSS feeds would be nice.

See, do this right and:
people subscribe
some will have it automatically loading into itunes
you then create obnoxious podcasts and force the word to listen

Ain't the web great?

It is pretty lame. But humorously so. And since we have all the crap, so might as well add it. I'm going to have fun with it while the buzzwords are still funny.

And yes, there will be more ways to get audio in. I'm thinking: upload, email, skype(?), SIP(?), IAX2(?), flash recording, etc.

Custom RSS feeds should be possible too. Most immediately: ?tyoe=audio&format=aac or something. And then we keep 3 or 4 formats on the server? *shrug*

But I gotta run. More later. Just braindumping.

Upload is cool, email is nifty (most of my posts now come via email). Being able to do SIP would be nice, though since SER can't do voicemail well, and asterisk is somewhat of a pain for millions of users. You would need to put some thought into how to make it happen.

That and I can see people trying to use SIP to do party lines, or answering machine like stuff (my answering machine has been asterisk for a while, its lovely).

If you want to have some fun with podcast, go subscribe to openpodcast.org. Its like public access television, only its podcast.

Oh, and just as bad.

I don't know if what you're working on is related or not, but I've syndicated a feed of a podcast I run (radiodtb) and the entries that include the enclosure don't show up in the syndicated feed. All of the other entries do. I've filed a support request, but I just assumed that the LJ syndication parser didn't like the "enclosure" part in the feed and skipped the entry. If this is related and you're working to enable podcast-style stuff in the rest of LJ, I hope you guys will be sure to address it with syndicated accounts, too.

Regardless, even though I know you think the whole podcast buzzword craze is silly, I'm happy to see that LJ is moving to make it available.

Will the LJ RSS parser handle enclosures not hosted on LJ?

I'm more interested in using enclosures to send people large images and the like out-of-band.

Heh, if you're going to go to the effort of creating a enclosure, may as well create an atom/rss feed for only phoneposts (kind of like what already exists for recent images).

We already support either ogg or gsm-wav. But those both suck for most people, so we'd like to get mp3 support (trivial, but requires licensing), or most likely we'll just add 3 or 4 download links for each audio type... ogg, gsm-wav, aac/m4a, flac, ...? Who knows.

Cool would be being able to hand-craft an tag at the start of my LJ post and LJ would be smart enough to "eat" it and attach it to my post so that my normal user RSS feed includes it in the RSS feed. Voila, instant Podcast-via-LJ.

That'd be swell, you know?

I like it from a dork and I-know-RSS-kinda perspective, so I might add that, but it's definitely not a good end-user experience.

I originally wrote "... hand-craft an <enclosure> tag ..." but used real angle-brackets instead of HTML entities. Oops.

please refrain from using the term "cali." the word is "california" and those from there say that.

i hope you're not also running around saying dreadful things like "frisco" and "san fran."
