So does it work? I assume it booted if you saw that, since I never said Debian. (like it'd be hard to guess, though)

You're supposed to need Workstation to make appliances, but I just used server, stopped it, and stole the vmx/vmdk files.

Haven't run it yet. Saw the /etc/network/interfaces line in the howto. But then I saw your email on the list archives where you mentioned Dapper Drake and thought, oh, close enough.

Oh, never mind. The DD was the VM host.

Yeah. My servers are Debian, desktops Ubuntu.

VMware

Since I mess with vmware almost daily for my job, VMware Server 1.0.* is about equal in features to VMware Workstation 4ish..
And I've taken VMs from Server to Player to ESX to Workstation in many different combinations, and between Windows and Linux, about the only thing you need to be leery of with the recent versions of Player, Server and Workstation is the device naming for cdroms and custom virtual networks.

Okay, finally finished downloading (and reinstalling VMware Server, turns out I only used the "beta"). Don't have the VM Playa. Might try that later. Got it booted and logged in. Oh, hell. I'm compelled to install some packages!

But still, this is just such a bitchin' way to deliver a play-with-it-understand-and-install-for-realz.
