Language abuse [Nov. 13th, 2006|07:34 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
I love seeing words like юзерпик.

In retrospect, maybe it's my fault and I should've gone with "avatar" instead of "userpic".

I think in English that'd be "life" water (or "water of life"). Live and life have different meanings, but I guess they're probably from the same original word...

Re: eh?

It's just the word "userpic" in Russian, sound-for-sound. I saw it and chuckled.

Re: eh?

there are loads of words that we use in Russian that are actually English and no one took the time to invent a Russian word instead.)

but Japanese with their Katakana - are much deeper into the language blending ))

Re: eh?

You know those Sesame Street character(s) that read words slowly, then faster and faster until it was fast enough to understand it as a word?

That's me reading Russian.

So I'm sounding it out all slowly, and then I think of Elmo or whoever saying "you-zzerr-p-ee-ck. userpic. userpic! userpic! userpic!".

It's like steampunks but instead of a world with ancient mechanical computers, they're all made out of a series of hoses/tubes or something...

Brad, it is so nice to hear. Thx! By the way, Живой журнал means Living Journal. So, it is right said that there is much more of life in it in Russian.

Why you think that it interrupts them? The next phrase of the man or the woman can be: "Join in". "Animalism" - I don't know how it sounds in English :)
