Adventures in Taxis, Walking [Dec. 7th, 2006|02:58 am]

My 5.8 km walk last night, since I failed so hard at taking taxis:

(whoops, wrong bridge!)

I knew I shouldn't have believed Edward when he said there were no Metro stations by his place. He lives in the frickin' center, where there's a Metro every couple blocks.

So what I should've done, walk to Киевская, taking Metro to Библиотек:[1]

[1] Unicode is fun. We didn't add it to LJ to let it go unabused.

I think walking is fun :) It's more fun in smaller cities though, as Moscow and any other crowded cities tend to become a bunch of scyscraper blocks with some architectural stuff shadowed with the modern buildings. Towns like mine are much more interesting to explore IMO :-)

Pretty long walk, huh? Do you feel safe in Moscow? (personally I do not, so I always try to keep as far from there as possible:))

P.S. weird to see Russian words in English-language post....

Yeah, I feel safe. Maybe I've just been lucky and avoided the bad areas, but I've been all over the center and seen nothing scary.

Moscow is very safe place if compared to other Russian cities. Here in Novosibirsk (as in other cities that i had fortune to visit) i even look around if i'm about to use my cellphone (cellphones are very common nowadays, but are still "too yummy" for so called "gopnik"s -- simple street robbers)).
Things are somehow better in Akademgorodok where it's supposedly safe to use laptops, near NSU (with free wifi internet at unbelievable speed of 1..3kbyte/sec) for example, but it is still very uncommon.

It's great to take metro for a change, especially here. Besides, it's definitely safer in terms of keeping up with the schedule.

Though, BART is great, too ;)

Thanks for the LJ! Always wanted to say that :-)

Aha, and I guess the taxi driver himself wasn't speaking Russian very good :)) Most of them are from abroad (like Mexicans in the US).

BTW, how're you typing Russian? I've been thinking about extending my Arabic input bookmarklet (it even works on LJ!) to support other languages...

I usually walk 4-6 km with a camera in my hand almost every week-end. Moscow is a great place for walking and just thinking about something. And sometimes I even make good pictures on my way. And, by the way, I really don't reccomend you to use the Moscow metro alone :) What they use to do is draw yellow lines with orange and orange lines with red.

I used the metro alone dozens of times without problems.... *shrug*

I would've liked to have my camera with me, but it's big and it was kinda liberating being free of it.

I've got a special bag for my camera, and I carry it along every time I go out for a walk. There's always a possibility of finding something interesting in the city :)

P.S. Love that userpic.
