A tale of two disk drives... [Jan. 4th, 2007|08:19 pm]

Today I went home with a 1.2 MB 5.25" floppy drive, courtesy hachi, and a disk array that can hold, say, 9,216,000 MB.

I was really excited about both.

Was.

I failed at getting either to work. Timeouts reading from both. But drive lights go on in both!

I've been thinking about getting the same disk rack too. Let me know how it goes.

It _should_ work. The hardware's wonderful, fully documented and all the libata hackers seem to love it, declaring it all working.

You need the PMP (Port Multipler) support in libata-tj, which hopefully is getting merged into mainline soon here, and then it kinda works (you can see all the ports, and sizes/makes of disks, etc...) Just can't read/write? I might be doing something else wrong?

I'll keep y'all updated

I forward ported Tejun's PMP work to 2.6.20-rc*, and posted it up on the linux-ide list.

(Mainly because 2.6.18 wasn't so happy on the rest of my hardware).

I'm glad I held off on putting my order in for big box. I'm heading in the same direction, but I'm lazy enough to let you continue blazing the trail. That or call the guys at Silicon Mechanics and dump the problem on them.

Re: stupid question

No, I hadn't checked ebay. Thanks!

(sorry, leaving your comment screened because your URL stretched the page...)

In fact, it can't hold 9216000Mb. Not for now. The biggest disk is 750,000,000,000b (remember, they have it metric kilos and gigas), so 12 disks give you 9000000000000b = 8583068Mb = 8.1Tb.
I know, it's really sad losing about 1Tb just in binary to metric conversion of kilos. But that's life.

Yeah, I was lazy. Google Calculator doesn't know MarketingMB as a unit.
