Today I... [Mar. 10th, 2007|04:09 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
[Tags|, ]

  • woke up on my couch after sleeping 14 hours -- wtf?
  • biked to breakfast -- parked right in front, and paid 10¢ for an hour of parking. <3
  • saved myself $420 by doing my own electrical work -- $12 GFI from the hardware store and crawling under my deck. done with sewer problems now?
  • found gardeners -- to maintain my yard every other week. I got to speak in Spanish. I love it when that's useful.
  • attained new level of love with motorcycle -- biked all over San Francisco... steep hills, curves, up to Twin Peaks, etc. my shifting is now smoother, going both up and down. If I have to slow suddenly going uphill, I'm now pretty good at knowing what gear I have to go in to resume after I've slowed down... I now turn off my blinkers pretty reliably after a turn... got my helmet all adjusted and nice, got anti-fog liner in there, nose gaurds, vents setup right... etc, etc, etc... basically just loving it and not having to think as much about the basic shit.
  • enjoyed the beautiful day -- damn it's nice out. can't believe this.
Later:
  • Suppenküche mit Randy und Freunden weil Randy heute Geburtstag (30!) hat.
  • trinken -- viel (natürlich).

I switched without missing a beat from english to german as I read your post, and only later realized I had done so. I love it when the brain works that well.

That's the main reason I love learning languages, even if I never become perfect in them... just to see those instances where the brain takes control and does something totally awesome like make up a sentence that you only later think about and go, "whoa, I said that all correctly? weird."

not sure what they showed you in the msf or whatever, (or maybe bmws are different somehow?) but it's not like a car-
it's a sequential transmission, so to get to 1st from 4th, you have to go in to 3rd and 2nd- so you might as well just downshift through them and use engine braking on the rear wheel while you fondle the front.
(rear wheel WILL step out if you're downshifting hard while turning at all)
(also another reason to do this- if you end up stopped while still in 4th or something it can be hard to get in to 1st, because the gears aren't spinning)

and- smooth shifting on upshifts?
don't even use the clutch :P

hard on throttle!
drop throttle for just a split second as you snick it in to the next gear-
(right in that spot between gear lash)
right back on throttle!
*snick* *snick* *snick*

I've been wondering about that.

I've noticed I can be really sloppy/fast on the clutch upshifting... to the point that sometimes I doubt whether or not I used the clutch at all, or was just really fast at it. I'll see how far I can push it, or try not using it at all without throttle.

In any case, I've now got the rythm down between clutch and throttle that I can upshift smoothly without really thinking about it, so I don't mind that much.

yeah it's more of a thing you do only when you're accelerating hard-
(which should be most of the time- hahaha)
if you're just tooling around town, then yeah use the clutch-

This sounds like an awesome day. Besides you weren't in Portland. Which I assumed you were at first, because I was reading through damnportlanders/friends
And then also, I was like "Who is this guy", and then I was like "this is THE guy"
Anyway, you should be in Portland. Its even more awesome than it used to be.

Will you come to Free Geek? We have reached even newer levels of computer awesomeness. Besides, for those who work there, we just spend our time carting around endless tons of disposable printers.

I'm glad you agree.

But it had no poker in it. :-)

But maybe that's good... lose less money.

Oh, recently we played poked with another people and without money - I played too and won a little :)
