In addition to watching about 6 episodes of Entourage last night before going to bed at 3:30 am or so, I read the entire Wikipedia article on the Voynich Manuscript, following dozens of links in the process.

The coolest part was reading about this dude who theorizes it's in an artificial alphabet representing the Manchu language, and went on to decode the first page, constructing this amazing table [mirror] in the process. Fucking crazy.

What's the use of the other columns when he has an IPA-looking one on the left?

I didn't realize languages other than Arabic had "emphatic" consonants.

It looks like the other columns are visual similarity to the unknown invented script in the Voynich Manuscript.

That's quite an article, and quite a puzzle. It reminds me of Foucault's Pendulum only (perhaps) authentic. Maybe it was part of a 15th century ICFP contest!

See also Wikipedia's list of famous ciphertexts, in particular the Beale cipher. It sounds a lot like the Voynich manuscript, but much more modern and with some alleged backstory still attached.

interesting.. maybe an ancient prophecy about global warming? I particularly like the picture of the "wheels", with both 13, 7, and 4 rays, which are found in a lot of mystical writings.

For amusement and possible edification

Terence McKenna riffing for ~26 minutes, as a 4.7MB MP3.
