Fuck this Snapshots shit I'm seeing on LiveJournal. (example ... however over the links)

Biggest annoyance ever.

Do I not still have a permanent account? Why am I seeing this advertising?

If I see this stuff anywhere on my content, I'm migrating.

You can disable them using that weird button in the upper right corner of the snapshot window. I'd describe it, but I disabled and forgot.

Looks for moderately amusing valleywag mis-quote in 10... 9... 8...

Ditto. There is a setting, but it seems to not turn off the damned things sometimes when I view other people's journals.

Not only does it keep the web usable for me, it helps my grandparents keep out of trouble. Love it.

yes, you can only control it for YOUR journal, not whether or not you see it on other peoples' journals, and they turned it on by default for Free and Plus users because they thought "the average person" would like it.

I didn't realize what people were talking about at first because Adblock+Filterset.G had already blocked them.

Chalk another vote for the "I hate that shit with a passion".

TechCrunch and friends also added it recently, though their RSS feeds don't have it (nor do LJ RSS feeds, thankfully).

Thank goodness that Javascript generally gets scrubbed out feeds so an attempt to put Snap in them wouldn’t fly at all.

I hope 6A got paid a lot of money for doing this, because it's remarkably lame. I had to manually add a rule to my ABP to block it.

As mentioned above, Easylist blocks Snap by default. If you are still using Filterset-G, which was the bees knees once upon a time, then I recommend switching - read this by the ABP author:

Welcome to post-SixApart LiveJournal; here's your accordion.

There's a checkbox here, where it doesn't belong, that controls whether posts (and comments?) that you make are marked up with the stuff — but it's off by default for permanent and paid users. (And on by default for everyone else, including syndications.)

Notice this feature's breathtaking lack of integration with the LJ style system, as evidenced by its immunity to ?style=mine and such.

Method of killing the evil, #1: click on the little gear in the popup, and it should be obvious from there. Requires accepting and retaining a cookie from snap.com. Worked for me, but some people report it didn't for them.

Method of killing the evil, #2: Mozilla users have reported success in applying their ad-blocking extension of choice. I'm mostly an Opera user these days, so I'm not familiar with the details.

Method of killing the evil, #3: Disable JavaScript entirely.

Re: Welcome to post-SixApart LiveJournal; here's your accordion.

To greatly speed up the loading of pages on LiveJournal I've also added:

127.0.0.1 stat.livejournal.com

This one also produces a much cleaner user interface with a lot of the time-wasting glitz removed.

you have to click on the link which goes to someone else's post where snapshots are enabled (and since the link is internal to livejournal.com , this one wouldn't show a snapshot anyway because snapshot doesn't show up on links to other parts of the site).

This is the sort of shit that browser vendors (or extension writers) should be implementing as part of their UI, not implemented piecemeal by random websites. What do browser vendors do all day while people are doing all of their work for them using shitty JavaScript abominations?

Or maybe this sort of thing should just remain the kind of software that's auto-installed via Windows browser exploits. That way all the "regular users" who just click "OK" on every single dialog box they ever see will have the new "feature", and the rest of us won't have to deal with this crap.

Actually a couple of times over the years I've seriously looked into migrating -- it's actually what motivated all my LJ-export work -- but so far nobody's gotten anywhere close to an acceptable replacement. (See also my rambling to you about doing distributed friends-only posts.)

distributed friends-only posts

I would like to hear any rambling anyone has to share on this subject! Is it just a question of making OpenID and RSS play nicely together and having a nice aggregator that will do this dance for us?

An intelligent encryption enabled (GPG/PGP ought to do the trick) usenet client would probably do the trick. Could do a similar thing with RSS. Just ignore anything not decryptable by yourself, and have a friends only button that encrypts the synchronous key with all your friends public keys. Might be a little bandwidth heavy, but that can be dealt with by implementing something like a p2p usenet. Add in a baysian post classifier/scorer and it would be awesome.

Snap: In the Picture
A few weeks ago, we told you about a new tool from Snap.com that provides visual previews on external links within your journal. Based on your positive response, we've enabled these graphics for Basic and Plus users. (Don't worry: If you already disabled the graphic previews, you will not have to do so again. Also, if you don't want to see graphic previews, you can easily disable them within your journal on the Viewing Options page under "Graphic previews.")
But we paid members still see the ads on the basic and plus accounts when we view those :/

Because seeing a thumbnail smaller than my fist is extremely helpful when deciding whether to click links?

Just in case, you know, how pretty the layout is affects your decision.

(I'm in with those capitalist jerks who use adblock, so I hadn't seen them either and I was pleasantly amused to discover that they're part of the auto-updated block list I use.)
