iPhone replacement [Nov. 13th, 2007|11:39 pm]

Update to my previous problem: Apple gave me a new iPhone on the spot, no questions asked. It must, indeed, be a common problem.

I asked them to erase my old one and watched them do so.

I came home, inserted new one, and iTunes said, "Do you want to restore this, or set it up as a new iPhone?" Restore. Few minutes... entirely back to how it was.

I wonder if I'll have to do this every couple months of if they'll fix their hardware by then.

Things do tend to get a bit more complicated (both at the Apple Store and at restore time) if you've jailbroken and installed some toys, of course, but if one of those toys you previously installed was rsync, the restore path is just a few steps extra.

My experience with restoring Palm devices has been about the same, except where I changed from 68000-based to ARM-based and some apps stopped working.

yeah, I don't know how people put so much work/information into their phones with no way of restoring it/transfering it to their next phone. I would go insane. Like the girl on "Chuck" this week even had a Treo but was SOOOO worried about losing everything on her phone when it had problems. Come on, HotSync people ;)

Nice. Did you do a genius bar appt? I have a persistent/annoying issue with mine as well, but just haven't dealt with it because I don't want to make an appt hours in advance or try to deal with tech support on the phone.

So no restocking fee? Someone I know had issues with two iPod Touch units and they were gonna charge 15% on both for warranty service.

While I have, as I implied before, seen one other person complaining of this problem in an Apple Store, I know ~10 iPhone owners personally, and you're the only one I know to have experienced this, nor have I seen it bemoaned in public (at all). So I don't think I'd be all that worried about seeing it again with the new unit.
