Nice.

Is there some fixed memory limit on the memcached instance per app?

Wouldn't a guaranteed minimum be more interesting for purposes of a cache that pushes out the LRU when capacity is used up?

Just treat it like it's magic and don't think about it. :)

Heh, heh.

One of the things that I made work on App Engine as FeatureServer (demo, some docs on what I needed for geo-on-bigtable); I'm thinking that with memcached, I can set up TileCache on there, though it'd be (like FeatureServer) more PoC than anything else.

It just looks like adapting the memcache wire protocol to a berkeleydb backend. The name seems pretty misleading -- their slides point out that it's not a cache but is for persistent data.

Yeah, it's amusing because the memcache wire protocol is the worst part of memcache, and that's all they took. And the name.

Why do you think the memcached wire protocol is so bad? Because it is text based and not binary? I used the memcached protocol as a template when I wrote my implementation and I liked how simple and debuggable it was - like HTTP in a way
