Vedomosti article [Sep. 25th, 2009|05:26 pm]

Don't believe everything (or anything) you read here:

I'm told that it's horribly "mistranslated" (probably intentionally) to make a more interesting article.

I wish I brought my own recorder to the interview so I could post the mp3 of what I actually said, which is that I'm working on making social networking federated & inter-operable like email. I'm not sick or bored of social networking or LiveJournal. I still use LJ. I do use it less, now that I don't work on it, and it's true a lot of my friends are now on Twitter or Facebook, but that's why I want things to inter-operate.

Stupid media. I'm done with reporters. Or at least I'll start recording everything.

Update 2009-09-25 23:07: apparently the translation isn't bad, some tell me, except for the headline ("All my friends quit LiveJournal", not true), and perhaps the biased selection of some of the quotes. Many people are getting a different idea from the article than I thought I communicated. Oh well. My apologies to Vedomosti, since it doesn't seem like it was entirely intentional.

russian media lies and blows things out of proportion just to make it "more interesting", but it just makes it all fake, and i can't stand it, but they do it all the time, all tv stations, all news papers, even the alternative ones.
in a way that was partially the reason people liked LJ in russia so much

это не научная тема требующая доказательств. каждый раз когда я лично сталкивался и мог проверить обе стороны, выяснялось что просто кошмар.
от знакомых, которым могу доверять я слышу тоже самое. пока не было прециндента который бы заставил меня усомниться в моём убеждении.
it not a scientific subject that requires proof. when ever I (personally myself) come across a situation when I know both sides of the subject I encounter horrible lies. All the people who's opinion I can trust say the same thing. And I never seen a precedent that would make me doubt about that.

I wonder how these guys feel when the person they interview records interview too. It's like telling customer support folks on the phone that this conversation can be recorded for a quality control purposes ;)

Let's talk about it

I'm afraid, you are not right.
I'm the reporter, with whom you've met. Text of interview was recorded, translated by me and then modified and approved by Google press office.
Would you mind to specify what is incorrect in the text, which was approved?

I haven't written that you don't use LJ. I've written that you don't use it so often, as you did it earlier.
Would you mind to ask you friends translators, who - as far as I understood -- have mistranslated (may be intentionally) my text in Vedomosti newspaper, to explain you what is written here about making social networks compatible?
"В Google я как раз работаю над тем, чтобы связать воедино различные интернет-ресурсы, социальные сети с различными платформами, для того, чтобы они работали вместе [и были совместимыми]".
If you need I can forwad to you Mp3 file and modified version of text, which was sent by Google. But I'm sure it will be better if you initially read correct translation of the text.
Vedomosti Newspaper isn't stupid media. If you don't read Russian it doesn't give you right to make such conclusions without reading text, which was published in the media
partly corrected and authorised by Google press office. If you
Interview was recorded by me, if you need Mp3, I can give it to you.
Haven't you agreed that LJ could become anachronisme, if

Re: Let's talk about it

My apologies if it's an accurate translation. I can't really tell, of course. I just know what I hear from others. :/

Thanks for replying, though.

If you send me the mp3 file (to brad@danga.com) I can host it on my servers and link it?

Re: Let's talk about it

I'll try to do it later today.
But I'd like to assure you that's not full solvation of the problem. It is in English and text in Vedomosti in Russian, that's why only translation of the text will dot the i's

Re: Let's talk about it

Brad I can confirm that the article states exactly what you said in this post. I was actually surprised that somebody told you it was "mistranslated".

For example:

russian: "Я не использую LiveJournal так часто, как это было раньше (последняя запись в ЖЖ на Brad.LiveJournal.com датируется 15 сентября 2009 г. — «Ведомости»), потому что все мои друзья им уже не пользуются."

english: "[Currently] I don't use Livejournal as often as I used to (last post dated by September 15 2009 - Vedomosti), because all my friends no longer use it.

I could not find anywhere in the article statement that you said you are sick of anything.

I've read it through and haven't seen seen anything "criminal". Except, maybe, for "All of my friends have quit LJ" which is a bit suspicious (as most of the statements containing "all" :))

Wow. That's a pretty big "except".

For the record, all my friends have not quit LiveJournal.

The article is titled: Все мои друзья уже не пользуются ЖЖ
Word2word translation would be:
All my friends aren't using LJ anymore.
That's why I've mentioned it - doesn't sound right.

But you said: "I don't use Livejournal as much as I use to, because I don't have... all my friends aren't there any more. Some of them went different places, all my friends went different places" (13.51-13.59 Mp3 -- record wil follow)

Brad, would you mind to give a more precise definition in your post, because words interviews "was "mistranslated" (probably intentionally) to make a more interesting article" and "Vedomosti" is a "stupid media" now don't sound correct.

An American's opinion

If that is a word-for-word transcription of what Brad said, his second sentence actually contradicts his first sentence:

To an American English speaker, the phrase "All my friends aren't there any more" means "Less than 100% of my friends use LJ"

(As opposed to "None of my friends are there any more," which would mean "0% of my friends use LJ")

But when Brad says "all my friends went different places", that is pretty unambiguous. An English speaker would certainly take that to mean "100% of my friends went different places".

Re: An American's opinion

Yeah, well, that last sentence should've been "all my friends joined different services". Which doesn't preclude them from still using LiveJournal... you can multiple accounts in different places.

So yes, word-for-word it looks like I contradict myself, but I thought the larger scope of the interview would've disambiguated that.

In any case, I agree that this sentence is the root of the confusion. It's just unfortunate. *shrug*

Your interview should have been one big voicepost. Which reminds me, we still have to fix the non-US voicepost numbers from getting cutting off after 1 minute.

american and canadian media is almost just as bad as russian
i cannot watch the news without cringing
its so badly biased like they think we are all just a bunch of naive lemmings (which is sadly true - look at the number of atheists versus the number of believers of all kinds)

you have nothing to apologize for

Even from the Russian text of your interview the conclusion of you giving up on Livejournal can hardly be drawn. And they deliberately put it in the headline ("my friends" usually means "people I trust"). And then this jerk had the nerve to guilt-trip you over the whole matter. Next time do not give in so easily, wait a little longer for reaction from others to be able to make a better judgement. And never apologize for what you said if you meant differently. It's not your problem.

never trust to Russian newspapers, they will edit whatever you say to make the article 'more interesting' and to serve interest their political or industrial sponsors

how you use LJ has changed, this happens for everyone now that there are so many social networks. sounds like you trying to say as a medium to communicate with with close friends has come to an end or slowed greatly but you still use it to communicate to the larger group...you still do that.
