| Hiking |
[May. 31st, 2009|01:14 pm] |
Went to Seattle with Sierra this weekend. Hung out with her parents and brother and went hiking with her dad and recorded it with the "My Tracks" Android app, which let me upload it to Google Maps: the 7.6 mile Hansville hike. Good hike & good app.
Back to SF tonight. |

| Ireland |
[Mar. 21st, 2009|09:10 am] |
Still in Ireland. Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Dingle, Killarney, Cork, ....
So pretty.
Bunch of photos on my picasaweb and a video on youtube (that was over picasa's wtf 100MB limit). |

[Feb. 5th, 2009|06:56 am] |
29.
Tonight's plan is/was to go out and get drinks with friends, but I've got a fever+sore throat that may interfere. Seems to be getting better, but we'll see.
Hmm, I kinda forgot to post anything all throughout January, including a 2008-in-review post. I should do that still. |

| Election stuff |
[Nov. 6th, 2008|10:35 am] |
Obama: yes! (kinda like this)
Prop 8: boo. (aww/heh)
Lost my laptop: boo.
And Palin didn't know Africa was a continent and not a country? Love it. |

| non-US citizens for Obama |
[Nov. 3rd, 2008|11:23 pm] |
I work with a number of non-US citizens and I keep accidentally asking them if they've voted yet, then catching myself.
At dinner tonight I accidentally asked a German coworker if he'd voted yet and his answer surprised me: because he's not able to vote, he instead volunteered for the Obama campaign this weekend, calling voters in swing states and encouraging them to go vote. He figures he did his part that way, probably doing more good than 1 California vote anyway.
Awesome. |

| Long day |
[Oct. 15th, 2008|12:42 am] |
Woke up at 6:30 am, got ready, picked up erinearl and drove to work. I almost never drive to work, but...
After work there was a memcached hackathon ~5 miles from Google at Sun's campus. So I went to that and met a bunch of people, both people I've met before and people I've only talked to online. And got some hacking done. It was weird working in C again after a year+ of C++.
So back now at ~12:30 am. Long day. I'm debating going to Seattle again this weekend (or this Friday, actually) for another UW event, this time not for a building's birthday, but they think I'm wonderful. And who could say no to that flattery? Debates & cooking & voting discussion party tomorrow (er, Wednesday) night at my house, if you didn't get the invite. |

| Я в Москве... |
[Sep. 26th, 2008|11:41 pm] |
After a little weekend trip to Istanbul, I've been working in Moscow this week. (hey, it's close)
Anyway, time to enjoy the city this weekend before returning home. My mobile number is +7 (915) 353-36-83 if there's anything fun going on that I should know. :-) |

| I'm alive. |
[Sep. 9th, 2008|10:58 pm] |
Apparently I haven't posted in awhile.
Let me remedy that.
Let's see.... where to resume? Last I pseudo-posted via LoudTwitter (now disabled, you're welcome), I was in Portland for my class reunion. So let's resume there, in traditional, lazy, bulleted-list fashion:
- went to Portland for class reunion. saw some people. didn't see some people. remembered some people. didn't remember one person. had thought about some people. hadn't thought about a lot of people. really glad to see a few people. etc. not sure this is too unusual from anybody's 10 year class reunion.
- went to Burning Man again. went kinda solo this year, riding up with random strangers (no longer strangers) and camping with a different set of random strangers (no longer strangers). some good dust storms.
- i'm totally behind on life/errands/laundy/house/taxes/blahblahblah. still no hot tub despite most the planning/prep done, mostly because i'm too damn busy and never at home to arrange logistics. i guess i work a lot. can't complain, though... work is fun.
- going to Istanbul & Moscow starting next wednesday (17th). should be fun too. working from Moscow office for awhile after Istanbul to justify otherwise-ridiculous flying time to Istanbul. stupid air travel. needs to be faster and/or easier to book.
- Seattle couple days after that? tbd.
Maybe I should just post to Dopplr and not LiveJournal. This post is devoid of content. |

| Car Crash |
[Jul. 8th, 2008|10:42 pm] |
The Audi's fucked up... http://picasaweb.google.com/bradley.j.fitzpatrick/CarCrash
Good thing everybody's okay and the two propane tanks in the back seat (seat-belted in) which I was heading out to refill didn't blow up.
Couldn't find non-emergency number quickly, called 911, they said just exchange contact info and insurance. Did that. Police did show up and took down info and mostly just stood around and watched as me and the other dude had it almost wrapped up by then. Other guy needed to be towed (to his friend's body-shop) but wasn't sure how he was going to pay (no credit card?) so I paid the $200 to the tow-truck driver just to get things moving. Hope that isn't an implicit admission of guilt. Tried to call State Farm to report it but no answer. I drove home, despite the left side doors not opening. Car seems fine.
But I got new propane tanks afterwards on the way home ... who wants to come celebrate a delayed 4th of July tomorrow night at my place? Burgers and hot dogs! |

| Hot tub & weekend update |
[May. 25th, 2008|04:06 pm] |
Saturday: slept 12 hours, hacked most the day (work stuff, but don't care... it's fun), met evan & meena for coffee at Ritual and then spaghetti and booze at Emmy's. went to party at Steve & Kendal's.
Sunday: woke up at grabbed a sledge hammer to work on removing the pond, because I want to put a hot tub there instead. Photos, including ones of my awesome hair and birds in the backyard. oh, and beat another ~15 songs on rockband (hard drums) later: coworker's girlfriend's graduation party in the south bay?
Monday: hanging out with avva, who's in town from Israel. He wants to go shoot guns or something with people, also in the south bay? (I know zero about guns) But there's also talk of a big group of people going hiking somewhere?
Too much south bay. |

| Bay to Breakers |
[May. 18th, 2008|09:27 pm] |
nick and Paula came into town Friday night for the weekend, mostly for Bay to Breaker's. We went with Nick's friends on their Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure float. Poor photo from 7am this morning, during assembly:
(not pictured: Circle K and Wild Stallyns stenciling)
I was Socrates (online toga generator!). Nick was Billy the Kid. Paula was a princess. We had Bill & Ted, Rufus, ... just about everybody but Abraham Lincoln. I was totally into our Joan of Arc (so cute and feisty) but Nick said she was engaged, only to later tell me she wasn't. But by then she was making out with some dude in a tree. Oh well.
The booth included two kegs, a pitcher of jungle juice, a generator, and a ridiculous speaker on top that pretty much won the most fucking loud thing on wheels contest.
Here's Nick getting almost arrested by a very pissed off Officer John Ruggeiro for violating "417 of the Penal Code". Which turns out to be about brandishing firearms, whereas Nick actually brandished his middle finger. Towards the cop. In any case, Dan Bernards and I were pretty sure the cop was full of shit making up numbers (which he was: including "418 lying to a cop! He said he didn't flip me off!" ... My thought at the time: "Really? 417 and 418? They're contiguous? That's a coincidence!" ... taking notes while Nick's on the ground) The cop called Dan "Mr. Lawyer" for asking questions.

Too much sun & beer.
Good times.

| DNA Sequencing |
[Apr. 17th, 2008|02:56 pm] |
A tweet from earlier today:DNA fedexed to Iceland. Genetic predispositions forthcoming. Friend me on decodeme to share genes! :P (Seriously, they're a social networking site?!)
I can't wait to actually add my foaf:dnaChecksum field to my FOAF. I might need to flesh out that spec a bit more, though, clarifying how to specify the digest function and the input fileformat. |

| Taxes |
[Apr. 15th, 2008|09:13 pm] |
After lots of frantic emails, calls, faxes, and motorcycle trips to the bank and post offices, a lot of my money is now gone, safely in the hands of the government.
I fortunately found a postal truck parked near a post office on my second attempt at finding a post office at 5:40 pm, and the postman took my (and 3 other people's) envelopes. Hopefully it gets postmarked or whatever. |

| Tonight |
[Apr. 5th, 2008|01:32 am] |
I had two options for this Friday evening:- go to Tahoe & ski
- go to Monterey & dive
I did neither.
Skiing would've required both days, I'd already committed to diving when my friends did their certification check-out dives, and I kinda hurt my knee the other day playing Ultimate.
But scuba: I couldn't find a scuba partner for tomorrow morning, and everybody else will be in classes, sitting on the bottom of the ocean tossing their regulators and finding them back.
So I sat at home, cleaned up music collection more, and did this hack: smart MP3-aware file chunking for Brackup. Now I can retag music at will and iterative backups in the future won't re-backup the music bytes, just the ID3 tags. MP3 files, when smart chunking is enabled, now have 1, 2, or 3 chunks, depending on number/type of ID3 tags.
As for fun stuff: I'll drive to Monterey tomorrow and just pay for one night's hotel, party it up in the hotel bar/pool, then dive Sunday morning with Erin, Whitaker, Tessa, Dan, Julie, and not Ojan.
Update: (oh, I also got iSCSI working from OS X to Linux. what a frickin' eventful evening, apparently.) |

| Sunny Saturday |
[Mar. 22nd, 2008|07:55 pm] |
Lovely Saturday. Sunny, productive, and fun.
Woke at 7:30 or so, did some work around the house, had breakfast with Becky and Tessa, chilled at their place a bit, came home and did a bunch more life chore/errand-type stuff, then went for coolest motorcycle ride ever up in Marin. Miles and miles of uninterrupted curves in the sun with views of the ocean, trees.... and the sun just starting to set as I was crossing the Golden Gate coming back. So awesome.
At one point I got lost, pulled over, and the iPhone geolocated me in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, just west of the bridge. In reality I was a half mile from Stinson Beach, 8-10 miles northwest of where the iPhone positioned me. Useless. :) |
