Muscovites, any recommendations on what I should do tonight in your fair city?

SMS might be best, since I'll be leaving work soon probably. +7 (915) 353-36-83.

Thanks!

Hiking [May. 31st, 2009|01:14 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Went to Seattle with Sierra this weekend. Hung out with her parents and brother and went hiking with her dad and recorded it with the "My Tracks" Android app, which let me upload it to Google Maps: the 7.6 mile Hansville hike. Good hike & good app.

Back to SF tonight.

Travel [Feb. 13th, 2009|03:50 pm]

After 5 nights in lovely Barcelona and a night in Casablanca, Sierra and I are currently in Marrakesh at the most ridiculous hotel I've ever seen.

Marrakesh is ridiculous(ly awesome) from what I've seen. Time to go see more. And get foods. Foooood.

P.S. Everything is in Arabic and French. I speak neither of these languages, but I understand the French letters and a lot of the words. I know like 5 French phrases. They don't get me very far.

After a little weekend trip to Istanbul, I've been working in Moscow this week. (hey, it's close)

Anyway, time to enjoy the city this weekend before returning home. My mobile number is +7 (915) 353-36-83 if there's anything fun going on that I should know. :-)

I'm alive. [Sep. 9th, 2008|10:58 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Apparently I haven't posted in awhile.

Let me remedy that.

Let's see.... where to resume? Last I pseudo-posted via LoudTwitter (now disabled, you're welcome), I was in Portland for my class reunion. So let's resume there, in traditional, lazy, bulleted-list fashion:
  • went to Portland for class reunion. saw some people. didn't see some people. remembered some people. didn't remember one person. had thought about some people. hadn't thought about a lot of people. really glad to see a few people. etc. not sure this is too unusual from anybody's 10 year class reunion.
  • went to Burning Man again. went kinda solo this year, riding up with random strangers (no longer strangers) and camping with a different set of random strangers (no longer strangers). some good dust storms.
  • i'm totally behind on life/errands/laundy/house/taxes/blahblahblah. still no hot tub despite most the planning/prep done, mostly because i'm too damn busy and never at home to arrange logistics. i guess i work a lot. can't complain, though... work is fun.
  • going to Istanbul & Moscow starting next wednesday (17th). should be fun too. working from Moscow office for awhile after Istanbul to justify otherwise-ridiculous flying time to Istanbul. stupid air travel. needs to be faster and/or easier to book.
  • Seattle couple days after that? tbd.
Maybe I should just post to Dopplr and not LiveJournal. This post is devoid of content.

Disneyland Birthday [Feb. 4th, 2008|10:26 am]
[Tags|, ]

I'll be in LA this afternoon until Wednesday morning.

My birthday is Tuesday (the 5th). For unrelated reasons, I'll also be visiting the Happiest Place on Earth on the 5th. (yeahyeah... Disneyland for my birthday... what am I? 7? Who cares. I love it.)

Anybody want to go out tonight (and/or tomorrow) for some bday drinking?

35 hour Christmas [Dec. 26th, 2007|12:21 am]
[Tags|]

I woke this Christmas morning in a Moscow hotel, had breakfast, got in a cab, and spent 24 hours traveling west, gaining 11 hours, leaving me 3 hours of remaining Christmas in the deserted ghost town of San Francisco. I guess that means I had a 35 hour Christmas.

The planes were, to my disappointment, not empty. That would've been sadderfunnier (word?). But TSA agents with Santa hats was sadfunny enough ("Look, we're trying to be likable!").

I look forward to tomorrow... a day of nothingness. Will be great. (And will be even better if my lost suitcase arrives...)

Misc [Dec. 23rd, 2007|01:31 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]

I've been in Moscow for the past week for this Google Code Day [video], giving a talk on social graph / interop stuff ("Открытие Социального Графа"). It was a public talk, so I should be able to post the slides, but I'll wait and confirm before I do.

Went to SUP's holiday party too. [some pics] But I guess those pics don't really highlight the ridiculousness of the venue. All the nightclubs here are pretty extravagantly ridiculous. But there was no George Clooney or Gwenth Paltrow in a cage. (love that article: you don't often see the phrase, "We OWN you, bitches!" in a printed newspaper with your breakfast, hotel restaurant windows looking out to St. Basil's in the Kremlin...)

I just got a call from the hotel receptionist saying that my driver was here. My driver? What? Oh, my flight was originally today, so probably my return taxi to the airport, but I'm returning now instead on Tuesday (yes, flying all day xmas). But even so, a driver at 13:30 would be way too late to get to the airport. I ask the receptionist to point him out or describe him. She's flustered, trying to explain that he's black. (Black people are incredibly rare here.) Went out, found him, and after a confusing conversation, turns out that not only was he going to the wrong airport (Domodedovo, not Sheremetyevo), but he was supposed to be driving Boy George, not me. Wtf? I can only imagine the confusion at the receptionist's desk that she called me down to "my driver" instead of Boy George.

Anyway, Moscow is great, as always. I love this city. One warning, though: when a relatively large Russian guy with the nickname "Wolf" wants to drink whiskey with you, politely decline.

Speaking of wolves, apparently a wolf boy is loose in Moscow. Wtf.

Newly discovered funny blog from article above: Moscow Doesn't Believe in Tears.

Unrelated misc links:
  • 2007 OpenID wrapup
  • Who mattered in 2007 -- apparently I matter, and I'm an introvert. Several of my friends matter too. Love the insular valley. Reminds me of the directed graph I saw recently with two nodes labeled "Blog" with two edges pointing at each other. Yay! :)

Back from Burning Man [Sep. 3rd, 2007|01:42 am]

Back from a week in the desert. Holy shit... good times. I wouldn't even know where to start with the stories.

I'll have to do a bulleted list of crazy/awesome shit I saw, as well as random story snippets. But I'll do that later. For now... sleep.

I'm going to Burning Man for the first time this year.

I'll be at 7:30 & A, part of the "Astral Photo Project" camp. I'm making a list of where people I'll know will be... let me know where you'll be if you're going.

I'm in Austin this weekend, having been invited to a meeting for the Transparent Federal Budget Project. Not my usual cause, but I'm told I can help. Should be interesting.

Anybody want to meet up tomorrow night? Austin bars are calling my name.

Heading to Portland tonight for a week for OSCON & general Portland awesomeness. Other Bay Area friends coming along include Leah, [info]whitaker, [info]lisa, [info]bulknews, and [info]mcnibblet. So looking forward to it... tons of things to do and places to go.

I heard about this the other night: somebody gets a plane to fly over San Francisco showing Harry Potter spoilers on LED marquee under its wings. Best spoiler method ever.

Yesterday:

hacking with Whitaker,
a productive meeting,
custom t-shirt made, saying:

EFF IS
MY BFF

rum in the Haight, people watching,
and then at night, went to Dolores Park and watched Sixteen Candles on a giant inflatable screen with another ~1000(?) people sitting on the grass on blankets drinking wine and cheering on every scene in the movie. <3

I should pack.

Virgin America plane tour [Jul. 12th, 2007|11:15 am]
[Tags|, ]

I got invited to take a tour of one of the pimped out Virgin America [wikipedia] planes this morning. In addition to the excitement of being on the SFO runway without going through any sort of security whatsoever (wtf?), the plane was also incredibly cool.

Every seat, including economy, has:
  • power (regular US jacks, not EmPower)
  • Linux-based IFE with:
    • music/video on demand
    • qwerty keyboard on backside of in-armrest controller (seat-to-seat chat with other passengers)
    • save your playlist, it follows you to your next flight
    • order food/drinks, optionally pay with credit card, have it delivered to your seat
    • Doom and other open source games (they're letting people develop on their platform, too)
  • USB jack (charge your ipod, plugin your own mouse/keyboard, etc)
  • ethernet jack (wifi also on board)
  • ..
The plane also has great seats and crazy mood lighting.

I guess the whole thing (website, central servers, 3 servers in belly of aircraft, IFE, etc) was designed from the ground-up to integrate together, not careless slapped together later.

Should be fun to fly when they start doing flights.

Back home. The flight felt short and was quite bearable. I guess that was my tenth 11+ hour flight in the past 6 months, so maybe I'm just getting used to them.

The post office didn't seem to process my online submission about stopping my mail. I wouldn't care except they love to nag me about doing it every other time I'm away for awhile and my mail slot fills up. They also brag how easy/simple it is to do. So I thought I'd do it this once, just for them, and they ignore my request. Lovely.

Time to go ride my motorcycle and eat some American food. And maybe exchange some currency.

Yes, I'm still alive.

I had a wonderful time in Moscow, Istanbul, and St. Petersburg. Much love to everybody who joined me on adventures and introduced me to new, distinctly Russian things. Russian banya was especially interesting. :)

As of yesterday, I'm now stopped over in Frankfurt spending a few days with [info]calliste and her boyfriend before continuing home to San Francisco on Thursday.
