my morning [Jun. 18th, 2000|03:03 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
didn't finish cleaning up in time before my mom got back ... she was pissed. house was a mess. had to go outside to clean some it and my allergies are killing me ... can't find my Claritin. then moved all my crap from the furnace room into my real room, now that most my relatives are gone. anyway, been working on job stuff ... learning/installing Postgres and PHP, two things I should've learned awhile ago but never had a reason to.

Re:

PHP is more Perl-like than C/C++ like ... I've tinkered with it some, just not much.

PostgreSQL looks fun .... MySQL sucks at SQL. The only good thing about MySQL is that it's fast. PostgreSQL seems to be more like MSSQL and Oracle (i.e., it supports most of SQL)

Re: mySQL

What's wrong with mySQL? It's pretty powerful as compared to like SQL Server right? You use mySQL for this site?

Re: mySQL

Brad was stressing to us that the database-consistancy issues (usually implemented with server-side database procedures) simply aren't addressed at all by MySQL. (But I'm open for alternative answers. :-) It seems to be a direct tradeoff of functionality for speed. Your thoughts?

Re: mySQL

It's decent, but it doesn't do all the cool things that real RDBMSes do, like foreign keys and constraints and support languages inside the database...

After Whitaker mentioned that he didn't have a place to play with PHP, I set up http://brad.note.com/ for you guys; Mary can get you passwords, etc.

Re:

Well except for "class" and "object" which is what C++ is...

PHP is like C/C++ for the objects and class and you have the usual C functions printf, fopen, fgets, strcat, strlen, strtok...

PostgreSQL support more the ANSI SQL than MySQL but I would never run a big site like LJ with it...

Anyway the two are very fun to work with... I have done some business interface (customers, invoicing...) with them and it was wonderful... I came from the MS NT world and was impress by them... Specially PHP which way better than ASP... ASP are buggy and I don't say that just cause I hate MS, it was true...

Re:

I runned some queries with it and got to much response time... Anyway when you fetch 1000 records to create a webpage I would have prefered something more faster
