Brad Fitzpatrick
Doing my best to learn LaTeX. I've been meaning to for quite some time, but hadn't gotten around to it. Now that Nick and I are starting to look into the business of selling printed copies of people's journals to them, I figure I should learn how to do some quality typesetting. (that and I need to buy a two- to three-thousand dollar color laser printer....) Any recommendations on either sources to learn LaTeX (books or websites) or good laser color printers? (HP 4500 DN looks good....)

I got a HP690C in my store.. it is old, rusty, noisy but usable..

B.T.W .. HP is a good printer maker.. esp. they laser jet. I always find their printer better than any other brands. Has been using HP product since I buy my first computer. Using a HP Printer now... new one :-)

Is it worth the work?

Brad,
Do you think people will buy their journal? Because you are investing some cash in these, I suggest you do a survey first? Like spamming the member list with this cool news of having your own journal printed. And if the respond is good, then carry on. :-)
Just a suggestion :-)

Re: Is it worth the work?

Hey man don't rain on our parade :-p. After an exhausting 10 minutes of research we discovered that although kinkos is a neat store, they do rape you up the ass when it comes to printing. So the only way we can do these journals for less than 150 bucks a pop is to do it ourselves and to do that we need a printer.

Re: Is it worth the work?

I guess a client survey will be good to see if this plan is workable.. I wish your all the luck. If you need any help, just drop me a mail and I will do it :-) .

Re: Is it worth the work?

What about binding? How do you do that? And on an expensive printer, was is the cost per page? Speed? I guess money will make anything work though.

Re: Is it worth the work?

binding is still kinko's job. cost per page is cheaper than kinko's by a factor of 10 for color and a factor of 50 for B&W.

LaTeX

RTFM, y0. There are a lot of tutorials available on the web.
It's really quite easy...
But you'll probably want to use TeX, actually.

Re: LaTeX

i've been reading tons of them ... just wandering if there was a definitive or popular one.

you're always telling me to rtfm .. I get the idea that you think I haven't though of that or something ...*shrug*

Why TeX? LaTeX is just the math/layout macros?

Re: LaTeX

LaTeX is a set of macros more suited to writing reports/essays/papers/letters, etc.

You'll need to get down and dirty with TeX to actually draw boxes and such.

I could actually do it, maybe... I don't remember much TeX (it's kinda complicated)...

rtfm

Just wondering what the f stands for. My prof. once told us the f stands for "fabulous" but I'm thinking it's something more spicy. ;)

Demand?

Yeah, I'm kind of with Yhitze on this one. I'm not really sure who's going to want to buy their journal. I mean, if LiveJournal was going to get shut down all of a sudden, then sure, I'd definitely buy a copy. But to buy a copy of it when you'll NEVER have the most updated version and when you can access it in it's complete form on the web. I guess I MIGHT do it once a year or something...like...every 1 year anniversary since the first day I posted..but other than that I'm not really sure.
