a blah day [Oct. 13th, 2000|05:11 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
Voicestream sucks lately ... can't even use it on the weekends or when the weather is bad--- "System Busy" it says. however, it does beep and tell me that I have new voicemail (since people couldn't actually call me either). I go to check my voicemail though, and guess what? can't call that either. great. can't wait for 3G cellphones. existing technology sucks.

Called US West... waited on hold for 35 minutes and finally talked to somebody seemingly competent.... nobody in the 4 different departments I've talked to has access to the complete US West database. in other words, nobody can really be helpful when it comes to fixing a problem that probably spans so many different areas, like ours does. Their tech support system is just terrible... the guy today told me how to "beat the system" and get helped better-- he was pretty cool. He told me the times to call in when you can actually get ahold of people, different menu options to press to shortcut to the right department, what to say to operators to get them to transfer you to departments you couldn't otherwise reach... as cool as this all is, it doesn't make up for the fact that we still have broken DSL ... it's not like we don't have it (like Nick or Roper), it's that we had it for 2-3 weeks and it was great, then they moronically let another company disconnect us and can't figure out now how to hook it back up. If I could find the idiot responsible for setting up their system I would seriously beat the living crap out of them. I have so much anger and aggression built up, hell, I could probably hospitalize their entire IT department.

Faith told me Speakeasy is looking for people with Unix, Web, and Database experience. Maybe I should get a job there and do my part in making at least one largish company not suck so much. But do I have time? Probably not. I do kinda want a job, though. Hrrm.

Don't know what I'm going to do now. Don't feel like doing a damn thing. Maybe I'll take a nap and listen to music.

working for DSL companies...

Heh... I used to work for Covad... the idiots that disconnected you. Do I think that one person can make a company like that work right? Not f*cking likely... support issues like yours are very hard to fix, usually because of the lousy communication between all the parties involved.

What probably happened is that you had an open install with Covad (or at least it seemed open...) and they had the phone company connect your DSL connection to the Covad DSLAM at your local Central Office.

Tell ya what... if you give me the details, I'll talk to a support lead at Covad and see if he can fix the problem. I could also have him contact you, if you'd like.

Let me know,

Re: working for DSL companies...

I don't think it's a Covad issue anymore.... I'm just waiting for US West to get their act together.

Thanks for the offer, though....

Voice of the ex-insider.

Boy, you'll be waiting a long time.... I worked for Qwest DSL (megabit) support all summer. Not a fun job. I think probably 60% of my calls each day were exactly like your problem. The tech support system is actually not too bad actually, but there are a few places where it breaks down. Still, at least you still have standard phone service. some of our customers lost that! The main problem with DSL is that Qwest is trying way too hard to get it to compete with AT&T @home, when the copper wiring in most areas can't handle DSL. Also, @home is (as a user myself) IMHO, a better product. It's about the same money too.

But yeah, if you want i can have one of my friends look into your case, though i'm not sure what good it will do, except prevent you from holding at megabit. (Which used to be over 2 hours, but now i hear it's down to around 5-10 minutes.) Oh yeah, and if you get sent to the moc (Megabit operations center), you are just screwed, they are in arizona and the hold times there are outrageous. Anyway, good luck w/ DSL. I hope you are using the cisco 675 though. (as the other modem sucks)

Re: Voice of the ex-insider.

I'd love any help I could get!

My phone number that the DSL is on is:

The megabit trouble ticket number is:

I have the following case numbers open, but I don't think these matter:

I have my computer setup to check the internet connection every 5 seconds and play music really loud right when it's available... I'm starting to think I'll never hear it. :(
