Hahahahah!! [Oct. 20th, 2000|06:41 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
You want to see how stupid some of the people in the computer science department are? This guy in the database class couldn't figure out how to use a damn scrollbar when the database returned his query results: stupid message. When I got the message I started laughing, but now I almost want to cry. (not a "happy" cry but rather a "disappointed in the human race" cry....) I mean, gimme a break... this is a CS student. He should know how to use Windows common controls, of all things. *sigh*

...

The more I see of CS, the less I want to be a part of it.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it, though, and right now I'm sure my brain's a bit more apathetic than normal.

Re: ...

As I've told you before, it's only the most stupid people that are visible... there are still a ton of really intelligent people in the department that more than compensate for the stupid ones. It's just that I don't make LJ posts about the good ones.

Not very surprising

I don't know much about computer science, but you are correct in saying that if your going to be doing it you should have some idea about windows controls.

I work as a internet tech support rep for earthlink and some of the saddest calls are people who call up boasting about their MCSE'S but when it gets down to simple things like going to the control pannel, or configuring network components .. the person goes totally wacky and forgets how to double click.

I'm not surprised at this at all, it"s a sad time that we live in, but maybe things haven't changed much.

Do you think that there were cavemen that didn't know how to bludgeon people with their clubs?
Was there a CLUB support for them?

INSTRUCTOR: "ok first I want you to take the club in both hands."

COMMON CAVEMAN:"ugh!"

INSTRUCTOR: "ok your holding it upside down..."

COMMON CAVEMAN: "HEH"

INSTRUCTOR: "No its still upsidedown"

COMMON CAVEMAN: "ARRRGH!"

INSTRUCTOR: "GIMME THAT! what are you stupid?
Ok this is how you use it.. "
(ACTION: Instructor whacks caveman over head several times till caveman is dead, and then he walks away shaking his head disapprovingly.)

INSTRUCTOR: "IDIOTS.. ALL IDIOTS."

HEHE

Good luck with all you do! You have created a wonderfull Service here. Thanks.

It may seem pathetic that he didn't know this, but at least he had the nerve to ask. Far worse to have suffered in silence and remained ignorant. Strangely enough, I once ran into a group of grad students (in psych!) who had an incomprehensible prof, and not one of them queried it -- now that's absurd.

At my last job, the one a quit, my project manager asked me if I could "take off thsoe last three letters on that picture, the letters g and i and f, it makes it look ugly. We just want the client to see the name of it like "mpower" instead of "mpower.gif".

I just sat there and looked at her, I didn't know how to respond.

Finally I sucked in a big breath and shot out "well sure, but then the browser wouldn't know what it was and would not render it properly" and then she just stared at me..

Re:

Not to be picky, but you weren't entirely correct in what you told your boss. The web browser (client) doesn't decide how to view the content based on the filename... it's based on the mime type. The server checks the filename and picks an approriate mime type to send. However, you can force a specific file or entire directory to be one mime type, or even change it dynamically.

<Location /some/path/mpower>
ForceType image/gif
</Location>
