mp3s [Oct. 20th, 2000|07:04 pm]

I've decided to get really organized with my mp3 collection. I've tried it in the past, but this time I'm going to carry through. I got a plan ... I'm starting to sort everything. At the top level I'm having just directories of artists, then under those directories for albums, and if I only have singles, that artist will still have a separate directory. I then have a "By Genre" directory with symlinks to the By Artist sub-directories ... so an artist can exist in multiple genres. I'm also going to have a bunch of playlists and stuff, auto-generated. I'm then going to serve it all (to our house only) with Apache::MP3 ....

Part of the reason I'm doing this is because I've discovered I have over 20 GB of unused disk space. Unfortunately, most of that is on my Win2k box, so maybe I'll setup a bunch of smbfs mounts. Hrm.... project.

We should get a crappy old P100-32MB for the living room so we can serve MP3s during parties. Hook that bad boy up to the receiver and DJ away. :-)

how many mp3s do you have to sort through?

i've got 20gig of them at the moment, but in there i have two folders of about 4 gig in size called misc, just filled with a complete mixture of mp3s, i really should sort them out, but its a bit daunting :(

[bradfitz@papag mp3]$ du -k . | tail -1
9619640 .
[bradfitz@papag mp3]$ find . -name '*.mp3' | wc -l

so actually I don't have that much.... 9 gig.

The best way to organise them is in directories of artist/album, then the following filename:

artist - album - track no - track name.mp3

This way, alphabetical ordering won't screw any of it up, and you've got all the info you need in the scrolling bit of xmms...

Also, take a look at http://mp3sb.org/ -- it's pretty slick.
