i ramble and go nowhere. [Nov. 10th, 2000|10:32 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
getting distracted --- started working on a dozen different things. making progress on them all, but slowly for each. i then downloaded AIM and ICQ and got really distracted... I hate AIM and ICQ for Windows. Windows users: you don't know what you're missing until you've used ICQ and AIM on Linux. They're so much easier to use... no clutter, no bullshit, they don't take 5 mb of memory each. There are no stupid banner ads or stock tickers or e-commerce tie-ins.... stupid stupid Windows. The OS is fine (NT and 2k anyway), but the software for Windows is just terrible. The UI on ICQ 2000b is the worst piece of shit I've ever seen. GnomeICU is so much better... so clean, so simple.

in other news, i ran out of salsa chips without salsa, but i'm not sad. salsa chips without salsa suck. and i finished my iced tea. for that, i am sad... i must go upstairs and get more. but this chair is so comfy.

in yet more news, i used vi for the first time today for something real.... i edited my crontab with it. emacs is cool, but i need to stop using it and learn vi well ... vi is so small and fast. emacs = too damn slow.

okay, i closed AIM ... back to work.

Re:

vim is the vi dialect i want to learn ... it looks cool. evan uses it and i phear his mad skills.

i'm a pine person and don't think i'll switch to mutt anytime soon ... i know pine way too well. mutt does look cool, though.

Re:

i seem to recall gnomeicu having a command line option (-a, perhaps?) that avoids going to the panel and instead loads the main window right away.

i'm on a windoze machine now though, so i can't verify that.

I agree

Honestly, win98/95 is just a piece of junk OS... they charge you a bomb for the solfware and what you get in return is "ILLEGAL OPERATION" or "FATAL ERROR- PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE" ..The only + point is that it is easy to use.

As for linux, I give it a big thumb up. Nice OS, never crash (in my case), but the only - point it has is that it has far less solfware to install than windows... but i believe as more ppl turn clever and start using linux, there will be more solfware.

As for now, I've ordered a PC from dell and got Redhat installed.. using a win98 computer now which sucks big time!

Gabber

Try Gabber. Using Jabber it ties AIM, ICQ and maybe something else into one XML messaging system. The Gabber UI is really simple and clean, and it's great to have a list of AIM users alongside ICQ users in the same app.

There's even a Jabber perl module!

Uh HUH - Go Linux go!

I grovel before your all powerful Linux geekiness. I am still a member of the Gateimus collective, but I hope to free myself soon.

Do any of you guys do any gaming on Linux?

Re: Uh HUH - Go Linux go!

I don't do any gaming in general ... but an increasing number of titles are being ported to Linux, or run under Wine.
