cranky, tired. [Nov. 27th, 2000|10:14 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
i fell asleep on my bed at 6:15 or so. woke up about 9:30 or so. i'm cranky that livejournal is going slow.... the thing is, the throughput's higher than ever. in other words, the server's getting more done right now than it ever has before, but divided by the number of people using it, it appears to be slow.

the problem is all the new users. i'm thinking it'd be fun (and helpful) to just ban all new @aol.com users. they're nothin' but trouble anyway! ;-) or, to be even more elitist, i could also ban all @hotmail.com, and all other free email services. yup yup .... that'd be fun.

there'd probably be a group of people that'd be pissed off, ya think?
after i woke up I went to burger king and got dinner. tired still .... going to go to bed as soon as I finish my stupid physics homework. i skipped physics lab tonight... it was only a makeup one if you did crappy on a previous one.

i heartily agree

its elitist as hell but i know what a pain in the ass aol users are. hey...if flex net does it why can't you?

are there really a lot of people with problems using this site? how hard can it be. even loserjabber is hella easy to use.

Re: i heartily agree

i didn't realize there were "LJ" parties.

truthfully i just started getting into this thing recently, when my friend darcy (jetgirl23) told me about it.

now i find, however, that a million people i work with use it and basically what you got on your hands is a wild fire, boy. which rocks. but i can see it being a pain in the ass in terms of server load.

what's this dual vhost mod_proxy hack you've got going?

Re: i heartily agree

Basically, modem users suck. While they're downloading pages at 5 Kb/s they usually tie up a process on the other ends, feeding it slowly. So, the solution is to setup a buffer in between your process and the client... either by setting Apache's SendBufferSize high, or setting up another apache vhost on a different port, and making your port 80 vhost just ProxyPass to that one, and putting the buffer there.

The SendBufferSize is cleaner, but it's not apparent to me so far which actually works better.

Re: i heartily agree

dude! you should totally co-lo there.

its funny cuz all day i was thinking "damn, this site is slow. if only he'd move it over here. it would be hella fast for me to get to it from work" :)

seriously though. we at this second don't have the bandwidth that would rock for livejournal. but its coming *very* soon. we're talking a seriously big fat pipe into our office. as well as a much larger space.

i'm thinking though that you could have something very interesting/appealing to our company here...have you talked to anyone here about any sort of partnership/trade?

note i'm not a business dev person. i just think your site is cool.

Re: i heartily agree

I thought you guys went through InterNAP .... I'm going to colo at InterNAP or Speakeasy, but I prefer Speakeasy because I could get less than a full rack from you guys probably.

What sort of bandwidth do you have? I only need like 10 GB per day or so.... is that too much?

Re: i heartily agree

I figured you had to work at either amazon or speakeasy .... I knew that both companies had large numbers of LJ users.

Speakeasy Rules!

Speakeasy is great!
I use your DSL service here in Maryland, and while you are not the cheapest, the reliability and the customer support are great! Keep up the good work, and consider a feature discount for LJers :) .
