What Brad should be thinking about:
The dipole moment associated with an atom of iron in an iron bar is 2.1 x 10-23 J/T. Assume that all the atoms in the bar, which is 4.2 cm long and has a cross-sectional area of 1.5 cm2, have their dipole moments aligned. (a) What is the dipole moment of the bar?

What Brad is actually thinking about:
Beer

k...

atomic volume of Fe is 7.1A or 7.1x10^-8cm
volume of Fe rod is (4.2cmx1.5cm^3)= 6.3cm^3
atoms in Fe rod (6.3/7.1^-8) = 8.87x10^7
dipole moment (assuming all aligned... YAY no vectors) 2.1x10^-23J/T)(8.87x10^7) = 1.86x10^-15 J/T

w/ prop significant figures = 1.9 x 10^-15

k, i'm probably wrong.

took a minute to give it a shot (figured since i'm studying chemistry i'd have the atomic vol of Fe handy).

i'd go for the beer.

Much Needed Break

Not only do you need a beer (from the sound of your posts lately) but you need to have said beer on the beach in a drunken haze in the alcoholic's dream: Cancun! I took a short 4 day trip there in September and it was super cheap (cuz it was hurricane season). It did rain everyday but in my drunken stupor I could've cared less. I highly recommend it. Just a little suggestion.... :-)

Re: Much Needed Break

I've went to Mazatlan and Puero Vallarta for my last two spring breaks... absolutely wonderful both times.

*sigh*
