unreliable [Jan. 4th, 2001|12:53 am]
Brad Fitzpatrick
installing/re-learning freebsd on the servers. i'm about to see if it supports all my hardware.

things i hate lately:

-- LJ being slow
-- people being unreliable
-- Virtualis' unreliable network
-- Windows 2000 being unreliable
-- these poweredge servers' BIOSes taking ages to boot

freebsd boot disk's doing its thing. i'll keep ya updated, cause I know 3 of you care.

make it at least 4 of us that care.

thank's for the updates. i do look forward to them. sure, there are many that may care less about the technical stuff, but i am very interested.

thanks.

Re:

each machine has two nics ... one on the motherboard and a separate one... I recall one or both being intel etherexpress pros ... I think both.

21143 or 21142s ? I'm familiar with the driver, don't know if they support offloading checksums though.. tell me if i'm right, and i'll check

Re:

won't be able to check until the machine is done installing ... I saved the dmesg from when Linux was on it, but nothing in there shows anything about the nics

that really isnt worth it. livejournal doesnt process enough packets to make a difference. calculating checksums is trivial to the load in this case.

well, i obviously dont know you well enough to state much... but speaking from a conservative aspect, i would say that it is best for livejournal to stick to "stable" drivers instead of using modded drivers.

that has nothing to do with you, because obviously i do not know you very well. speaking of which, what is your nick on irc now?

yes, you used to hang in phrack. as for writing production drivers... you have commit on the tree? what drivers have you committed? the reason i ask, is because i know the {f,o}bsd crew fairly well... so hence the curiosity.

noted. production level standards van be much different though. network appliances for instance dont have to scale very much typically.

anyway, enough of a point has been made already. i just want to point out one thing, i have no problem whatsoever with you modding the drivers, i just question their usefulness and place on the livejournal systems.

with that said, good luck, i wouldnt mind looking at the diffs after you do it.

yeah freebsd!

i wasn't able to read til now...but sounds like the freebsd install went ok. what things do you still have to do with it?

...i hope i'm not on the "unreliable people" list yet...
