I'd better go to bed.|
Have to drive to Portland this afternoon... should sleep before that.
Maybe I'll make Kenji or Blythe drive. (Sorry, Amy .... Blythe I trust because she's driven my car before, and Kenji I wouldn't feel bad beating the crap out of if he crashed it, plus I've driven his van.... if you crashed my car I'd feel guilty killing you, and I'd live with inner torment forever.)
Chris Mason (of SuSE) found the mozilla ReiserFS -notails bug which breaks mozilla compilation (by way of corruption files on your disk, hooray!) but he's found the root of it, after working with me and another guy with the same problem. He's been sending me patches to try out... what a cool guy. yay for open source. nothing like getting a bug fix and updates right after you report it. And a few weeks ago when I was trying to get UDMA-100 working on linux, the linux-IDE guy responded to a question I had within minutes... turns out he works for ASL (the company responsible for dead lj-stan) .... not sure if I like ASL or not, now. I think it's just bad luck.... I think they are probably a good company, but goddamnit... if I don't get stan back today i'm not buying more servers from them.
They haven't shipped Stan back yet? I thought that Vu was going to have it sent off days ago! I'll give him a call...
Just spoke to Vu...
The issue seems to be that when he arranged to get the upgraded server for you, that meant that there would be yet another burn & test period that would have to be waited on.
He said that he could have it shipped out today or at latest tomorrow... I told him to get it out today, as we are starting to reconsider our sourcing. I made it clear that I personally wouldn't want to do that, and that if he could get the server out today, it would do a lot to address our concerns. He said that he would rush the RMA department and make getting it out a priority.
While I can understand the need to do a 48 hour burn in on new systems, they better damn well ship the thing... and soon. I would be a little prudent about burning bridges quite yet, however. The fact of the matter is that we have yet to see another company with price/performance ratios better than ASL. While their support so far has been inconsistant and less than stellar, it is an unknown whether we could do better elsewhere. As time goes on, we will be less vulnerable to the effects of having to RMA a single server... what will matter more is their price/performance ratio and their ability to deliver new servers to us.
Don't worry about your inner torment- I don't have a liscence anyway. :-P
Shit, I think that's the best reason of all. :)
yeah right. if I ever cause an accident, it'll be so glorious that you won't be ALIVE to beat the crap outa me. yeah, i don't fuck around with pussy little fender-benders.
Called back at ASL to check whether the server has gone out yet. Spoke to Vu. Looks like ASL is having a brown out today, related to the power shortage. IF</a> ASL gets power back on anytime soon, they can verify the system is ready to go and ship it today. Grr!
This doesn't happen often, it's worth noting. I checked his story with the website that covers the state's power reserves, though, and it checks out.
You'd think that they would make it so that greyouts wouldn't effect businesses so much, but that's not the case. Businesses get significantly lower electricity rates if they agree to greyouts and other power reduction efforts, actually.
Things are nice and sunny today, which means that air conditioners are on all over the place. As a result, power consumption is even worse than winter. I'm dreading summer. Normally, I don't mind being at work so much during 100 degree days... an air conditioned office beats a non air conditioned victorian. This year, however, I can't see how they'll manage to keep offices around here anything better than uncomfortable to sweltering.
Vu is going to send me a confirmation e-mail when the server ships... best I can do for now.
Okay, at least I know now to expect it to today, then. Thanks!
