Stupid Hotmail [Apr. 28th, 2001|02:25 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
I created a Hotmail account for the sole purpose of getting an MSN Messanger account to bug Kenji, sitting 8 feet away from me.

I haven't told a single person my hotmail address, nor have I even used it to send mail, yet I get a few dozen spam messages per day on it.

I'd heard that Microsoft was in the business of spamming, but that's pretty weak. You'd think they could find other ways to make money.

Not that I care... I just get sick of that stupid thing popping up to tell me I have mail. Now that I think about it, I can probably disable mail notifications. Update: Nope... looks like you can't diable new spam notifications. Retarded.

I get up to a few hundred spam messages per day between all my email address that forward to bradfitz@bradfitz.com. I don't even care about mangling my email address because my spam filters catch nearly all of it... I only see 1 or 2 per day.

On hotmail you can activate the "junk mail" mailbox filter. I have a placeholding email account on hotmail, and it was getting spammed, and I turned that on, and eventually I was getting no mail again, just how I like it.

hehe, I believe there is a way to stop getting notifications of new mail.. Also to stop the spam completely, other than blocking sender which works miracles.. :)

Hehe, don't go tellin' but I stole AOL's "You've Got Mail" voice (the whole reason I dled Aol instant messanger.. was for that reason.. hehe, :) So every time I get msn im to tell me I have a new message, it plays aol's message..irony ^-^ such fun.. I love emoticons Btw.. have you learned to change your name on the messanger?

The same thing happens to me. My MSN tells me I have 323 messages in my hotmail inbox. I finally just deleted it. It was pissing me off.

From a seasoned (read as: pissed) Hotmail user...

Activate "inbox protector" on your hotmail account then tell it to put all bulkmails in the trashcan. You'll never see another email that isnt addressed to you. Make sure you tel lit that any and all lists you subscribe to are "not bulkmail."

Re: From a seasoned (read as: pissed) Hotmail user...

After the day I got 1800 Bulk mails in one day (I swear this is true. some mailbot freaked out on me)I switched the inbox protector so that it automatically puts all bulk mails in the trash bin. Since then I only get about 1 a day in my inbox. Try that.

Huh?

That's actually pretty strange. About half the people that e-mail me use my Hotmail address and I get almost no spam (maybe a message a day). I don't use MSN Messenger though, maybe like ICQ there are bots constantly scanning the messenger service for people.

i saw a posting somewhere

from someone who claimed it was really easy to make a list of valid hotmail accounts to spam (alas i forget the detail). a lot of the spam i get to mine is posted to six adjacent addresses (as in, if someone _were_ to make an alphabetical list of valid hotmail users, the same six people are always my neighbours). and then other times i get mail entitled "hotmail users please read", as though the creators are sending directly to hotmail. if microsoft arent selling the list, then they should bloody tighten this (apparently well-known) security problem.

Bizarre. I have two hotmail addresses and have never gotten spam on either of 'em.

So do I, I don't have the filter checked, and I've never gotten spam on them at all.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you ;)

Funny...I created a hotmail account about a month ago, and I haven't been spammed yet. (fingers crossed)

that's wierd indeed. maybe in your haste you neglected to unsubscribe from the countless e-magazines they try to subscribe people to. i set up my main hotmail account specifically to use for LJ and a place to correspond with a few people who i'd rather not have to sift through my junk mail to get their messages. i haven't had but a few problems with junk mail, and those were related to me foolishly using it as the email addy i bought plane tickets through. then again, after the flak they got for not having updated their TOS, i wouldn't be surprised if they started selling new email users' names to the commercial industry so it can bend your mail box over and plunge its filth and human waste into it.
