Freon leak ... again? [May. 2nd, 2001|10:36 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
A long time ago there was a freon leak in our house and I got really sick for about a month: I had a stroke, had to go the emergency room in an ambulance, had to give myself blood thinner injections for weeks, doctors couldn't figure out what was up... it sucked. Took a month until my mom realized what it was, when we turned on our air conditioner and it didn't work. Turns out I'd been sitting in my room with the door closed programming for hours and hours at a time, and freon was leaking into my room. It's heavier than air and odorless... so I wasn't getting enough oxygen.

Well ....... I think my old refrigerator's been leaking freon now. For the past several days I've been really light-headed and dizzy. I attributed it to lack of sleep. Today I've been having really prickly skin (hyperalgesia). Kenji or Chuck (I forget who) mentioned the fridge that's sitting down here.

We haven't used it since we moved it to this house.
We roughed it around a bunch moving it out of the old place and into the new place.
There's a bunch of weird loose metal tubing on the back that could be easily bumped.
There are no windows or means of ventilation downstairs.
Freon is heavier than air.
I've been spending a shitload of time downstairs programming the last few days.

So ... given all this, I assume the fridge has been filling the room up with freon and I've been breathing it in.

Maybe I'm imaginging things, but this would certainly explain my recent dizziness, light-headedness, and hyperalgesia.

I moved the fridge outside.

this is not an invitation to steal the fridge! We don't sleep. We have cameras. And a broom to swat you with. don't test us.

but if you do steal it, we'd be interested in knowing if it works or not.

Wouldn't Kenji and Chuck possibly also be exhibiting these symptoms though?

No ... they're hardly down here. They come check their email, leave, come back in an hour, etc.

I sit down here for 5-6 hours at a time.

I was glad to run across your freon story. I moved the other day and the guys that I got to move my fridge damaged it, and the freon escaped when I plugged it back up. I waited 24 hours before plugging it up, but when I did, I heard a loud swishing noise ,like the air being let out of a tire or something. I got really sick a few hours later, I felt like I was going to pass out. I sat in a chair and went to sleep, and slept like a log. I thought it was just that I was tired. I felt like my sugar level and blood pressure dropped dramatically, so I ate something and felt better. But a few hours later, I felt the same way so I ate some fruit. I've been going thru this cycle ever since the freon escaped. I wake up in the middle of the night, and feel light headed, nausous, like I might pass out. So I eat a snack, and then tonight it hit me...it must be the freon. The fridge is still in my apartment. I went to look at a new one yesterday, but I am going to immediately have the broken one removed. Thanks for your story. Looking forward to feeling better, and getting a new fridge. I don't know where the money will come from, but I just have to believe in miracles. I only want one for $500.00, nothing fancy, just the basics. I'm already grateful for the new fridge, even before I get it. Bye and take care.
