Re: glad i got hold of kenji
thanks for calling...
no prob, i was just glad i was reading my friends journal when i heard the news, about 5 minutes after i heard about the fire i scrolled past ur entry about the new servers going to speakeasy and almost had a heart attack
Argh. I'm sorry. =\ How did it happen?
i don't know... it's still on the news showing it burning/smoking/fizzling.
that remodel was moving all the employees into the top floor(s) of the cafe and turning the existing employee office space into colo space..... i was getting all excited about having more space for servers (they're totally full now) but I guess that's not going to happen now... at least for quite awhile.
but i'm mostly sad because that cafe was just damn cool.... and the speakeasy people totally rule. i'm sad for them too. :-(

yep- it'll likely be attributed to the floor treatment.. once shellac goes up, the entire floor goes- burns like a mother too. that fire was HOT- the window frames are allll warped, in and out- so it's not jsut from the firehoses banging on them.
everyone's fine, btw. al the SE folk are spooked, and a good portion of them saw it on news, and migrated.
crappycrappy thing, considering how god things have gone as of late for SE. hopefully the structure's salvagable- though i'd be REALLY surprised.

Found out last night that Mike only leases that building, he doesn't actually own it... still has insurance on it though. I am still in total shock.
Holy shit...fires suck.
There have been two I can remember on the hill I live on, and fortunately neither came too close to our house nor did they get any other houses, but still. Both were brush fires and with one of them, I rushed down the block to hurry behind a neighbor's house and use a hose on part of the fire that was creeping up towards someone's fence. That's how close it got. The fire department was on the ball, but I think it would've at least gotten the fence if I didn't slow it down.
shitty. guess ill never get to go there then.
It's always awful when something like that happens.. I'm really glad to hear that nobody was hurt though. Phew!
Holy crap ! Glad nobody got hurt... Close shave ! That sucks :(

That sucks =(
what is a two-alarm fire ?
It's fire that's so out of control the ladders, engines, and pumper trucks that responded cannot adequately handle it. Therefore, they must issue a second alarm for reinforcements to come in from nearby fire stations.

Re: Two-Alarm Fire
So if you ever hear of a four-alarm fire...it's really bad.
Yesterday I read that you were going to go put the new servers in there, and then when my friend and I saw the fire on the news, we totally freaked...then when LJ was down last night, we were totally convinced that everything was gone. We were uber-bummed. =( SpeakEasy ruled...it sucks that it's gone. *Sad Linny*
I'm sorry such a cool place burned down - my condolences as wel as hopes that they are able to rebuild good quick.
Perhaps LJ ought to have some servers hosted somewhere else? Like accross the country? I believe a good portion of your userbase is also around east coast, specifically DC/Baltimore Metro Area. I know of a few pretty sweet server hosing places here, and have a friend who owns a web-hosting service who is a member of LJ. He might be able to give you dedicated server hosting, and their rates are fairly low, I believe.
If you did host some machines here, you could sync them up both 9ouch - what a bitch that'll be.
I've got some ideas on how we might keep some redundant LJ systems up. Email me if you're interested in talking about it - firstname.lastname@example.org

This might be a good idea; if the database were lost many people would lose personal stuff that could not be recovered.
I hope this is not the wrong place to ask this, but does LJ have off-site backups? I don't imagine someone is going to Speakeasy and taking out any removeable media copies of the database; it sounds like a real pain.
I periodically copy data over to my home machine where I have a RAID aray, for safe keeping.

I'm glad no one got hurt. I was attempting to get back to my hotel in Redmond from the Capital Hill area when I saw all the firetrucks & the ambulances. It wasn't until I read my mail this morning that I found out what happened.
