Realization --- footnotes! [May. 19th, 2001|08:02 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
Realization: the best reason to cite anything and everything ... if you use footnotes it makes a page shorter, so it's easier to reach 7 pages.

Even without that "cheating" though, I think it's going pretty well.... shouldn't be too hard to finish now that I've read a bunch more of the book and have a lot of good ideas. (yay for reading... *sigh*)

Update: They also hate it when you use contractions ... fine by me: expanding contractions takes up more room!

HA! I've never used footnotes... End notes take up a lot of space too. And the contractions- I thought my Chinese media systems prof was the best because he didn't want us to use contractions ever.

but a six page paper with a page of endnotes looks more like a six page pager than a seven page paper, though.

but spread those end notes out over the other 6 pages and suddenly you've got a good 7 page paper and you can go do something fun instead.

True.. and what about your works cited section? Those take up space too ;-)

My American History teacher was on to us, so he always had word count requirements rather than pages.

Personally I always had a problem not massively going over the minimun word limit. One time we had to submit an essay of no less than 3,000 words for Biochemistry. I submitted about 22,000 words, excluding graphs, tables, footnotes, quotations and biblography.

My lecturer freaked.

On the other hand, when at the next personal tutorial we had I asked for advice on how to cut it down he did admit that it was all good material and apparently the bibliography section saved one of his PhD research students a lot of library time.

In fact that was the only A I ever got from him, I typically got B/B+ from him.
