Linux Virtual Server [Jun. 4th, 2001|02:44 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
Been reading up on the LVS project ... it's a lot more mature than it was last time I checked. I'll have to continue reading after Friday.

I should study.

You know, I realized you'd say that a few seconds after posting.

So sell LJ for a few million, give me a quarter, and I'll go buy a life.

LJ

LJ is the excuse to play with clustering.
Except Brad just went and bought a crappy
load balancer - when I had already told him
how to do it with DNS last XMas already...

We still love him anyway ...

Re: LJ

In case you care, this beats the living shit out of DNS load balancing. Since we can manage hits based on server resources, and route to specific servers based on cookies and specialized URLs.

Any further complaints will be matched with random animal noises.

Re: LJ

I do care, and wasn't complaining.
I'm very aware of the capabilities of your new set-up, as well as the rest of those on the market.

We love you, too, Dormando...

Re: LJ

We got the the load balancer at 10% of cost... extremely cheap.

Re: LJ

Then it was well worth the money !

Let me know when it's time to put the servers up in NYC Brad, I bought an ISP here ...

Re: LJ

Email me the details of that DNS hack again.

After Friday we're changing things around that'll permit replicated databases to only have a subset of the data around (the recent stuff) and changing the code to try that subset first, then fall back to the master database.

That'd make remote server farms more practical, being able to have a small database at those sites.

Re: LJ

If remote servers are going to be possible, why not buy rackspace at boston's internap facility and have me take care of those? Keep as much free stuff at Speakeasy as you can, too.

Re: LJ

You can afford to buy an ISP in NYC and you use DNS to "load balance"? Um, right.

While I won't argue the Big/IP is not a be-all and end-all solution it's a hell of a lot more powerful and flexible than any DNS solution will be.

This, from a guy who just set up his first cluster in 'Linux class' ? Be real ...

Seti@HOME ? Not. Distributed.net.

Re: LJ

Yes, I own Akula Communications in New York City. I can afford to buy an ISP in NY *BECAUSE* I do stuff like use DNS to load ballance.

Gee dude. You mean Cisco Worldwide Director sucks, as well as F5 3DNS ? Damn, I'm glad I've got a dorkus like you 'round here to tell me which end is up ! All these years I've spent in the data centers, and I haven't had a clue! Gee, I'll bet they even arrested me for nothing. I better go give all my clients their money back, too !

Brad, I'll send you a note on the hack, Real Soon Now.
Oh, sorry for the rant on yo thread...
