Laptops are expensive. I remember when I was little, my mom had a Zenith laptop (I guess they were good then). It was like 20 lbs, blue on manilla screen, half hour battery life, and when it broke Zenith had stopped fixing them. Hehe, good old days <g>

Hmm.

Just out of curiousity, how'd you get that config to work? I remember trying that myself a few weeks ago and having it bounce, so I tried it again just now and it still bounced - it won't let me put Win2K together with the Geforce2MX card.

Incidentally, you going for windows or linux or a dual-booter? One thing I don't understand is that they claim it's only linux compatible if you get the 700MHz CPU and take the crappier screen. That doesn't make much sense to me, as it seems to have the same basic hardware (video card, for instance) as the better model.

Or maybe they're just trying to keep linux users down. Fight the man!

Something like that anyway.

Anyway, awesome laptop, I'm jealous. Enjoy it. :)

Re: Hmm.

They won't *install* and *support* Linux on the sexier models. Doesn't mean you can't put it on yourself.

Re: Hmm.

They offered Linux support on that one, but I opted for Windows instead so I can get the DVD player software. Plus, I don't want Redhat.

I'll Partion Magic it then install Debian when I get it, hence the huge drive (huge for a laptop, anyway).

None of the 3 video cards they had as options were compatible with Win2K, but I said fuck it and added it to my cart anyway. I think they messed up their compatability data or something. nVidia not working on Win2K? They have the best damn Linux drivers but they didn't write Win2K drivers? Baah. I don't think so.

Re: Hmm.

nvidia tends to have very good support for win2k. i find it hard to believe that they wouldnt on the laptop chipsets.

Rawk. The 1600x1200 screen sounds sw33t. I've been loving the 1400x1050 on my ThinkPad.

Laptops are wonderful things. You're gonna want 802.11 after you get it, though. ;-)

Totally, but I wasn't about to buy it from Dell.... they charge a lot more for some things, memory in particular. I'll research 802.11 more and find stuff that's known to obey the spec well. I've heard too many horror stories of incompatible implementations.

Good call.

Sweet looking machine. ;-)

And you made the right choice on that warranty. Dell does an awesome job when you have CompleteCare.

It was really a different experience when you find a problem, and they have someone call you locally the next day, with the part you need (which was overnight shipped from Dell), and they're ready to come fix it. ;-)

GeForce 2 GO... Sweet... I know you don't play much games, but the thought of kicking your buddies' asses at Quake 3 from your laptop, anywhere, on the go, sounds very very sweet to me... ;)

Sweet!

Damn if that thing had a 1394 card it would be about the same set-up I'm looking at getting! Very nice -- good choice on the video card, beats the hell out of the Rage Mobile. I'm so jealous now...

Sure will.

They even offer it as a pre-installed operating system if you want. But RedHat only.... I want to do it myself, and want Debian. :)

If you want, you can have my old 486 DX laptop 25 MHz, 16 megs of ram, nonfunctional floppy drive, and a docking station that won't hold it...

But it looks very lovely :) Enjoy. And remember, don't take your electronic devices in the bathtub.

i picked up a slightly less beefed up 8000 a month ago. a very sweet machine (at least when i can keep it running long enough). my dvd doesn't connect properly to the motherboard, so they forced me to take a new dvd to see if that fixed it, which of course didn't fix it because it was the motherboard. i've been told by some guys i run around with at school that they've been hearing similar problems, just to forewarn you. otherwise it's a damn sweet model. congrats!

Enjoy your mobile computing bliss.
