now that you know how to make your own ethernet cable, you realize how much the store actually rips you off. $15 for a 20 foot cable!! *gasp*
No shit!!! We bought our cable for $0.15/foot ....
Was that the "old" ethernet [coax] or category 5 cable [10bT] ?
cat 5.... 100 bT, actually.

I need to make some cable. I will get around to it at some point... then I'll have the box which will be my LiveJournal dev server actually on my LAN! heh.
You don't really want to know this, but whatever! Irrelevence is fun.
No, it's totally on-topic.
Make more ethernet cable! Sell it cheap!
Mo' money, mo' money, mo' money!
go wirless, it's good now a days and is a lot nicer looking
yeah, i'm totally gonna get some of that stuff when I get my laptop, so I can roam around the house with it.
my roommates don't want to buy receivers, though.... 15 cents/foot ethernet cable is cheaper.
Well they probably aren't going to be picking up their desktops and carrying them around the house with them, are they? ;)
You'd only need to get one reciever.
laptop with wireless connection == you can hide from everybody and still have internet access, when your roommates piss you off that is ;-)

I'd reccomend a Ricochet
card if it's not too expensive in your area. Unfortunately it looks like my only chance for anything other than dialup currently. $80/mo :\
We're cheap. I found a 100' ethernet cable, and I just let the wife drag it around the house wherever she wants the laptop.
Did the first one you crimped actually work? When I got this job at ActiveVoice about a year ago, one of the first things I learned to do was crimp cable, and I found that I did it wrong about half the time. I don't know if it's difficult or I'm just inept. Fortunately I've inproved, mine usually work these days.

Re: Next step: cross-over cable
First several worked... wasn't until I started going quick until I made a bad one.
*old fart voice* Yeah, I remember my first cable ... ;-) (it was about 2 years ago in a Networking course, I haven't done one since)
The strongest memory what what a severe pain in the butt it was to get those wretched little wires into the right spots. ;-)
