What country should I pick that would both be interesting and have enough data available?
My paper topic:
Choose a country, and justify its selection (interest, country typical of similar countries, country different than other countries, etc.). Develop a brief history, regional geography, and demographic profile of the country. Also include a brief health profile of the country, summarizing the major causes of mortality and morbidity in the country. You may also want to consider infant mortality, life expectancy, and other measures. Due on Friday, February 1.Hmm.
Option 1: do it on some Caribbean island I've visited, knowing that the general health levels are lower there, and there'd be more to write about, but at the risk of it being difficult to find data.
Option 2: do it on Germany, if only for my own curiosity, and as a means to consolidate my studies a little. plus, there'd be a lot of data available, though it's somewhat boring, being a relatively healthy industrialized country. though i suppose one angle of this paper and the following two could be how it contrasts with other equally industrialized countries.
Blah .... I'm only taking this class to fulfill my final writing requirement.
mapquest has a cool thing that will give you states on any country. Realigon, Language, literacy rates, GDP, Expected Life, Phone Lines, Cell Phones, ISP's.
I think the lifespan in Afghanistan gets lower every day.
I'd say the first one cause I'm going to Nassau, Bahamas in April....no other reason....
Do it on Germany and then write the paper IN German and test your instuctor on his/her knowledge of the German language.
I'm not even sure if it is so hard to find information on the general health level on the Caribbean Islands. You might find more information on Germany, but then again, maybe not. The interesting thing about Germans is that they're all hypochondriacs.
Aaah! I have another rash! *runs away*
(no, I was lying)
Do the Germany thing. (I'm so biased)

ooh! I was going to say Easter Island, but this is definitely better...
chose anything but Canada... nothing going on here (but snow).

My god, I need a writing credit, too. Will I have to do something as lame as this?
I would choose a country that my ancestors came from...Sicily, Ireland, Germany, Wales, Scotland...but then, I'm a genealogist.
I've no idea as to your ethnicity other than what is hinted by your surname. :)
Should you, for some bizarre and obscure reason, do Sicily, I will try to point you to some good research angles.
If you want it to be easy to write, I'd pick a country with minimal history. That's much more complicated than getting a health profile. Actually, the CIA world factbook could give you most of the info for this assignment regardless of the country.
Try South Africa. We have lots of mortality and morbidity and stuff. Our past two Presidents have been imprisoned at some point in time.
I'll second that. Plus there's a lot of information to be found on the web.
Apparently 25% of our population is infected with HIV and that affects mortality rates quite severely.
Why not do it on Liechtenstein? They speak German and the country is only 62.4 sq mi so you should be able to write an unabridged paper on them pretty quickly.
According to Lonely Planet
their major industries are dental products, hardware, pottery, specialty machinery, and stamps. Stamps? Stamps.
It would be interesting to do something on Afghanistan, contrasting the situation before the King was overthrown with what it's like now after almost 30 years of civil war, the Taliban, and drought.
Do it on Denmark!
I bet you'll be the only one in the class doing Denmark so you'll get some cool points there!
I bet you already chose the topic but I just came upon a website with loads of info on Germany....
Otherwise...it may also be good for you personally...in case you come here.http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/detoc.html
have fun, I hope the link works.

Whoa! That's totally cool. Thank you!
I did choose Germany as a topic, so this'll be very helpful.
Off to go read all that now.... :)
