Stupid Banana [Jan. 21st, 2002|11:50 am]
Brad Fitzpatrick
I meant to type Stupid Montana as my subject, but I thought Banana was funnier so I kept it.

Here's my complaint about Montana:
http://www.mt.gov/ ... http://www.state.mt.us/

Same site. And one doesn't even just redirect to the other. Why did they get mt.gov anyway? Most other states don't have .gov subdomains.

But really, I don't even care. It was just more interesting than working on my paper.

Back to working on my paper....

Stupid South Carolina

http://www.state.sc.us/ ... "Our Web Site Has Moved to a New Location at: http://www.myscgov.com/"

What the fuck? When did SC's government become a commercial institution?

Hah. There's a post that caught my attention. I'm headed back to wonderful Montana today *gag* I fear the plane ride, and the layover in Salt Lake with a two year old. Gah. :)

No, Germany, but every single mention of Germany's geography mentions that it's about the same size as Montana. One article was stupid enough to put a link to Montana when it said that and I hovered over it and saw the mt.gov.

California has http://www.ca.gov , of course that redirects to http://www.ca.gov/state/portal/myca_homepage.jsp but it's still the same domain... :)

Why would they redirect???

They go to the same machine! (161.7.8.25)

Re: Why would they redirect???

Um, you don't get it .... the point is to have canonical URLs. They shouldn't both happily serve the same documents.

They should pick one or the other.

Having both introduces tons of ugliness: like spiders crawling both, say.

My state, Illinois, is one of the few to not have "il.gov" or "illinois.gov" (Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana all do.) In restrospect, though, I think it makes the site easier to find for those who don't know the state.whatever.us naming scheme, but they should redirect to the same URL and such.
