Selling bradfitz.com, the name? [Jan. 21st, 2002|02:05 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
Hah --- I just got mail from another Brad Fitzpatrick who's an artist and wants to buy bradfitz.com for his freelance illustration services. He wants a short domain name and "you actually have my first choice".

If there were enough zeros involved, I'd be perfectly content at brad.fitzpat.com for my personal content, or any one of my numerous domains.

The only way I'd do it if I got to admin the site still, so I could mod_rewrite all 404s to redirect to my new domain for all time. And maybe he could pay me to do his hosting also. Hmmm..... :P

Thoughts? Sell bradfitz.com? :-)

i'd say don't actually sell the domain to him
just let him use it on the condition that he pay you for hosting costs.

Re:

yeah cause dude wants it for his freelance illustraty stuff
what happens when he quits/fails/gets bored of that?

if brad goes renty with the domain then he's still got it if/when dude no longer needs it

re: bradfitz

I am just wondering how much money could make it worth your while to have the hassle ( or at least the time-consuming task)of doing the monitoring you describe if you sell him the name 'bradfitz'. You are often stressed and pressed for time to relax as it is, although some of the pressure will be gone when you graduate, of course. Also, why can't he use the name 'bradfitzpat.com'? That would save you the necessity and labor of changing something that is already established.

I would keep it. Once you have a name established its good to stick with it. I wouldn't have changed the bradfitz journal either, just made it friends only and made brad into the LJ one. (but then people like me couldn't bug you)

freelance artist?

ask him how much he'd pay. i betcha anything that his offer will be incredibly lower than you'd be willing to sell for. especially because of what www.bradfitz.com looks like, he probably won't expect that the sitename means much to you.

you won't sell. he can't afford it

I say you make him your bitch. Host him until you don't care anymore and then seize it back.

I'd do it for enough zeros... but it'd have to be at least 4, i think.

You gotta represent. bradfitz.com is old school.

I doubt he'd pay very much for it since bradfitz.org and net are still available. I think. And artists aren't usually rich until after they're dead ;)

Re: artists and their posthumous wealth

LOL Well you can be the exception that proves the rule...the artist that makes a fortune while he lives, like Picasso or Norman Rockwell or Ghilberti. :)

One thing you should keep in mind is that the business "LiveJournal.com" is in fact "bradfitz.com, inc." (according to this site). I'm not sure it'd be a good idea to have someone else own the exact name of your business. I think it'd be better to "rent" it to him or something.

Re:

I think the best option would be just to rename "bradfitz.com, inc." to "livejournal.com" or something unless he has other ventures planned. Re-registering the business would involve transferring ownership of livejournal.com and that could get messy with paperwork. *shrug*

I actually think LiveJournal the company is now separate from BradFitz.com Inc., as I recall.

I say keep it. You are bradfitz.

I'm sure that many people know the pain of not being able to get the domain you want because someone else has it... let him find another one! :-P

;o)

Hold Off

See if he gets rich. Then you can demand more from him. Guy could turn out to be another Thomas Kincaid, painter of lightweight.

Funny, I've had three different people offer to buy one of my domains, and each time I'd respond, "Make me an offer." Never heard from any of them again.

Hmm, I wonder if that would work for my ex wife...
