hi i'm going to rant because that's what livejournal's good for, right? [May. 30th, 2002|04:44 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
What do I want to be doing?
  • I want to write a good IMAP server.
  • I want to learn FAT and fix a friend's half-corrupted filesystem.
  • I want to play with Gentoo.
  • I want to re-organize my MP3s, and re-encode a few of my CDs.
  • I want to organize all my digital camera pictures, with extreme meta-data and logic on each picture. Such as, I can label a picture as "bob, outdoor" and "bob" is a rule implying "person" also, and "outdoor" implies "! indoor". So then I can query all pictures for things like "person AND NOT indoor" or "bob" OR "indoor", etc.
  • I want to finally learn ssh-agent
But really, I want to be swimming and playing in the sun and having sex and throwing rocks at trees and just generally doing nothing.

I want a house. I want a new deck in my car. I want a flatscreen monitor. I want my CD burner back. I want out of this furnace room.

I want to be left alone.

I want people to work with.

I don't know what I want.

I cleaned my car and went driving around, since it's nice and sunny out. I did some errands. I looked for a certain CD single, but nobody had it. I wanted to mow the lawn for a project, but my mom said it wasn't long enough. I wanted to run ethernet underground out to the hammock (had a whole plan, too), but then I realized I don't want to work in the hammock, and wireless reaches there anyway. But I wanted a project.

*yawn*

Gentoo rules, portage is second only to a real BSD ports tree. If slackware dropped off the face of the earth, I'd definitely use gentoo.

Did that rant make you feel better, I wonder?

_____________

Why don't you go back to Seattle and get a house somewhere there, so you have people around you that you can work with? And whenever they piss you off, you just close the door and take a bath, or ride around the lake, or whatever.

So what I'm saying is that at the moment you're still free to pick where you're going and where you're getting a house. Maybe you shouldn't get one in and around Portland.

But then, my advice is worth crap and isn't really advice either.

Or you make them move to where you live.

You don't use ssh-agent, or you just want to learn it more?

I couldn't imagine life without ssh-agent :P

1) If you manage to hack out a good IMAP server, congrats. Looks like a beast of a protocol to me, and I've just written clients. If you happen to do it in perl or python, I'll be watching :)

2) As for pictures and extreme metadata, thought about RDF or BeFS? Both or either might be useful for use or inspiration.

New Deck

Check out the Line of JVC Digifine's with mp3 cd playback. Nice aluminum finish and motorized tilt faceplate with auxilliary inputs in the front and back. Plus a dedicated subwoofer out.

Ive really enjoyed mine.

Here @ Crutchfield.

I usually feel that way when I spend too much time alone.

Rocks and Trees

Every summer when we're standing around waiting for something to do, somebody will grab up a handfull of rocks and start hucking them at trees, stumps, bigger rocks, etc. I think it's like the trade of the woodsmen or something because all the old guys are really fucking good at hitting shit. You can tell they've been doing it for a very long time.

You sound like that "Adminspotting" poster. Choose heroin, Brad!

I'm of the opinion that IMAP is completely worthless. I can't even imagine a situation where running my mail reader remotely through SSH (even running a GUI mail reader through an SSH-tunnelled X connection) is not faster, easier, and more convenient than IMAP.

IMAP could have been useful in, say, 1989. If they had gotten it off the drawing board by then, instead of continuing to overengineer it for another decade before deploying anything real.

yeah well....

your day was much more productive in the long run... I got sucked into re-tagging all my MP3s to all be the same format (thank god there are only 800 on this machine) and wasted my entire freaking day. having sex and throwing rocks would have been much more fun. keep it up. :-)
