DSL Modems [Jul. 1st, 2002|09:41 am]
Brad Fitzpatrick
Man, the DSL company interrupted my beauty sleep. All tired now. Worse, though, I won't have DSL for another week. July 8th is Verizon's due date for the line, then the cool company (DSL-Only.com) can do their thing.

And I need to buy DSL modem still. Anybody got recommendations or one they wanna get rid of? Whatever I get has to do 1.5M/384k.

I have one I'll send you for free. I think it'll work for you, I'll go home and take a look at it at lunchtime and give you the make/model. I bought it for my old DSL service, but then when I moved and switched providers they gave me a new one for free anyway, so I have this perfectly good DSL modem just sitting around in my apartment collecting dust. It'd be nice to find it a good home.

Turns out I'll be getting the older frame-relay-based DSL, and not the newer ATM-based DSL, so my choice of modems is extremely limited. Unless you have a Fujitsu Speedport, it probably won't work. ;)

But thanks. :)

I have a Fujitsu Speedport, but it's the one I'm using. I have the same problem you do, I can't use the other (nicer) modem I have from my old DSL service either. Oh well, good luck. :)

The modem you will need will most likely be dependant on what equipment your phone comapny has available in there CO. When I moved I had to buy a new modem because the DSLAM was full for the old brand of modem, so I would check with your provider to find out what brand modem you will need. Why there isn't a fricking standard I don't know.

I had Verizon ADSL, and I still have the router. Let me know if you want it, or if you want more details.

Is it a Fujitsu Speedport?

You still have manuals/cables?

It's a Westell unit, model 36R515, branded as "Bell Atlantic Infospeed(tm) DSL Modem". Doesn't appear to be documented on Westell's page, though they have docs for the 36R516, which looks identical. Never had a manual, never needed one. Still have the A/C adapter, can probably find a DSL line filter somewhere if you don't have one.

Based on acidmoon's comment, looks hopeful.

The DSL company's sending out 3 line filters. If you have the A/C adapter, that's good enough.

How much do you want for it?

I have a Cisco 675 DSL Modem/Router I'm not using -- I don't know if it would work, but it's got power cables, documentation, etc.

We have one we can loan you "indefinitely" ... It belongs to MSN, but for whatever reason they won't issue a pickup tag and it's been sitting around for 5+ months. We've called, reminded, poked and prodded, but they don't seem to care. We have the whole bundle in fact (with filters and such)
