My Stero Link 1200 arrived... it's awesome. I was really impressed at the quality of cables it came with, too... I wasn't expecting that. More reason to finish my Ruby/Evas remote control interface! And BTW, it works flawlessly with Linux... If you have USB audio support, it's just the first free /dev/dsp... for me, /dev/dsp1 (/dev/dsp0 is my built-in shitty sound card).

Internet at 24400 baud sucks. 6+ days. *sigh*

Worked a bunch on my new site... gettin' rad. Thinking about making an announcement and releasing the code. I know whitaker is interested in helping. evan might be. revjim was, but I think he's too busy being in love to help hack.

how does usb audio work? just map the actual sound card to a virtual device that it directs output to the usb device and it handles the conversion?

The "actual sound card" is nowhere in this picture. The USB Audio device appears as a second sound card to the system, and the digital signal (essentially whatever one would write to /dev/dsp*) goes to the box, and it does the D/A conversion.

Can you tell a difference in the sound?

Totally.

I might not've been able to tell if it weren't that my laptop soundcard didn't have a line out, so I was using the pre-amplified headphone out into my receiver.

But with good mp3s, the sound is wonderful now. (it obviously can't fix shit-quality rips & encodings :P)

Holy shite, I was just considering that very idea as a side business while I finish my degree -- building a high quality sound card or USB-connected "amp" for audiophiles (5 or 7 channel output, high-precision DAC, etc)....
