FotoBilder & PicPix [Jul. 6th, 2002|04:17 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
This is my new project, which I've been working on so much lately:

http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=fotobilder

You can read the userinfo for now. More docs are in CVS, but no code has been made public yet.

Feel free to join that community and ask questions. I'm going on a picnic now, so answers will have to wait a couple hours or so.

Wow, very cool. If I liked it enough, I'd ditch using Gallery for the photo album on my site. However, greck would give me hell for running mysql on his server. :)

Kick ass. Can't wait to see it.

Please make sure it's possible to randomly guess URLs of photos so that I can use this as a source for webcollage. The various photo-gallery sites out there used to work with webcollage -- generally you could pick a random photo-number and get one -- but later they changed things so that you had to get the album-number right as well, so the permutations exploded.

I imagine people will whine about privacy concerns, but I think the art needs of the many outweigh the embarrassment of the few, especially if you can't track a photo back to the albums that include it, or to the poster.

As I understand it, part of his design was to specifically prevent people enumerating images. (I imagine it'd be trivial to add support for it, though.)

One thing that irritates me about the majority of "photo gallery" solutions is that they make unpretty URLs. Going by the direction LJ is heading in, I'm going to assume FotoBuilder (where do you get these names?) will have pretty URLs that don't have unnecessary junk like file extensions, query strings and so forth just to select a photo or a gallery... ;)

Damn you for registering picpix.com with opensrs/domainmonger! We had inside sources at Network Solutions/Verisign combing over their database trying to what other domains you owned! ;)

What a great idea! I have family overseas that I try to share photos with...many of them are very computer illiterate...so it's been interesting the sorts of hoops I have to jump through to make the Internet a useful tool for communicating between computer savvy and non savvy folks. (like for example...I use Ofoto and create a giant album with LOTS of photos, but then my mom wants to have "just a subset" of those photos to look at every day.
This sounds like something that might make doing something like that feasible.
Let me know if you need an interaction designer to help out with user work-flow and usability. I've got lots of background doing that from working in consumer electronics products (both hardware and software) and now also am not working so would love to help out. (can send you my resume if interested...though I am offering this as volunteer stuff)

I assume you already know about Gallery, which sounds very similar yet uses PHP. I assume Fotobilder will be better. :)

I'm very picky about what I want, so that usually means writing the code myself.

Plus, if I'm hosting a service using this (which Gallery people don't do... they just make the product), I must know the code wonderfully and make sure it scales.

According to what Brad linked to, the code will be free but the site Brad will be running which allows people to use it without needing their own server will be pay-for.

Here's an idea: How about using S2 (the language, and part of the system) to style the galleries and whatnot? Gives a good reason to get it done, and benefits both FB and LJ at once!

S2 seems adaptable enough to do it, and I'll write the core.s2 for you if you like! ;)

That's exactly my plan, and I was hoping you'd agree.

Let's start discussing it in fotobilder, shall we?

fwiw, you may wanna check the gallery 2.x codebase since 1) it's already rdbms-targeted (with other plugins to become available afterwards - adodb is the dbms target plugin) and 2) the huge-scaling efforts are already targeted (see Bharat's recent emails about 2.x on gallery-{devel,users}

Maybe Gallery 2.x still isn't the right soln for your particular problem, but I just wanted to make sure the 2.x base had been checked out and considered (if nothing else, to pre-learn the lessons others have gone through)

just a thought - i'll be running 2.x against postgresql for devel with gallery 1.3 as the stable area for awhile. given the promise it holds for me and others i'd rather see more effort into helping 2.x along, but I understand the forces of NIH as well if it turns out that way :)
