headache & broken servers [Sep. 12th, 2002|06:25 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
I figured out why I've had a headache the last few days... no iced tea. Aaaah.

Speaking of Aaaaah, the servers still don't work. It wasn't the raid card or scsi card... we've narrowed it down to with CONFIG_HIGHMEM=4G, the machines are slow as shit (CPU seems to run at about 1/100th speed, though disk I/O is fine) and when the machines are only using 1GB (or, 960 MB rather) with a kernel without CONFIG_HIGHMEM, things are incredibly fast.

So, the lead linux guy at Rackable is looking into it... building a copy of our system there and tinkering. We also gave him access to one of ours.

So much for their frickin' testing program.

Anyway, it's nice being here and seeing everybody. Just wish I wasn't at Internap every night until 3am. Need to sleep for days after this.

Red Robin tonight with a bunch of people.... will stock up on caffeine and make headache go away. :-)

hmm, we just had a similar problem where some relatively high end systems turned dog ass slow when we put in Registered ECC ram, though this was only upgrading them to a gig.
