Cheesy Business People [Jan. 8th, 2003|12:59 am]
Brad Fitzpatrick
I forgot to mention earlier... a big part of today was dealing with 3 different business people. Seriously, nothing is more painful. They act all super friendly and cheesy, and when they send you a dumb contract or give you a dumb answer, you don't know if they're just dumb, made a mistake, or are actually trying to fuck you. And since you don't know, you can't reply assuming they're dumb, clumsy, or aggressive. So you reply such that it's neutral sounding for any of the three cases. The end result? It sounds business-corny-like itself. Aaaaaaaa. I will not be converted! I am getting better at it, though.... maybe I should go get my MBA. :P

I finished my hack to make friends pages load quicker. Go read and turn it on, if you want to beta test. So far it seems to be working.

I updated my Debian system and now everything's beautiful.... xft2, fontconfig, pango, gtk2, new logjam (with nested "Post as..." menu) ... very cool. If only I had some recent mozilla binaries with fontconfig/xft support. And the new gtk2 gaim. Guess I'll just wait for Debian.

I did drama for a year in high school .... kinda. nick and I never really took it seriously. He juggled and I walked around on my hands. He almost got kicked out of a play where he was just a cow.

No, I'll take drama over cheesy business people.

Ah see, theatre people act all cheesy to your face and then rip you apart the minute your back is turned. People would eat their mother to "make it".

I have to deal with some of our business partners everyday. At least in my realm of IT I only get 2 of the 3 you see. For the most part the people I deal with lack the knowledge to know exactly what they are writing a contract for. I am lucky as to I ask enough questions to where they have to go back with their techs and get all the information correct. But about once or twice a week I will get these vendors that will really try to get you. One of them being Insight/Comark.

So far outside of that job, my web stuff on the side has been really smooth but I really check out a provider before hand.

Relating in ways more possible than you could imagine, I am of the firm belief that they do not care about their business or job, despite their initial intentions. Apparently, integrity has went out the window and has been replaced with quick cash. Anyway, it's nice to see someone who is on the other side. :)

Sounds very familiar! There are some days when I wonder, "from which frat house did you escape?" when I talk to some sales drones. :-) But, take heart; there are some good people out there, and it is worth getting through some of the others to find them.

And you are right, simple time and experience does help you get better at it, and neutral/biz-corny isn't all that bad.
