i hate you phone [Feb. 11th, 2003|05:26 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
So after my previous lame phone call, tax guy calls, saying I forgot to sign something. Then my mom calls, working on my home office personal property tax forms... then some dude selling anti-spam software calls, wanting to push it out to all the LJ members, making incredibly liberal estimates about what percentage of the userbase would buy it, and how rich he'd get.

That's it... I'm off to buy a $7 caller ID box. I have the service, but my only caller-ID aware hardware is my 56k modem hooked up to my office machine, but now that I work on my machine in the living room, I don't have always turn my other computers on.

I wish I had a phone jack in my closet, where my file server is ... I have power & ethernet in there. Maybe I should add a phone jack. Then I could put my modem there, and make the caller-ID daemon I've long talked about, and write clients for Windows, Linux, and my TV. (if TV is on, broadcast IR signal to TV to bring up PIP to Enty showing calling party's name and number...)

OR I COULD JUST GO PAY SEVEN FRICKIN DOLLARS. I'm stupid.

Re:

Yeah, I saw some larger, non-caller id versions at E3/Comdex that you could put any message you wanted on. nEXGeN should get one, if I could ever find out where to buy 'em.

Man, this sentence confused me for a bit. This sickness is really getting to me.

The caller id daemon would be really neat, btw.

I've wanted one that played nicely over whatever else I had playing on my speakers...

chime then read the number and maybe say the name...

You could save the seven bucks and just start fucking with people when they call you. Start screaming that you're a zombie and you need cookies; you'll do whatever they say if they give you six crates of cookies and a sword that shoots lasers so that you can kill all of the rival zombies. Then cry for a few minutes. See what they do.
Wouldn't that be a lot more fun?

We already have a caller-ID-over-network thing in our house. Unfortunately, my modem doesn't support caller ID (or, it does and I don't know it does), so currently all it does is say “Unknown caller”

Also, it's part of a larger UDP-based messaging/info thing we use, and relatively unimpressive in the grand scheme of things.

Wouldnt help with spam and anti-spam guy (maybe they were the same people?) All crap phone calls I get have the caller ID blocked.. Very not cool since my mom also has her caller id blocked, so I dunno if its my mom, or salesperson on phone..
