Fun computer & LJ stuff going on, but I’d rather hack on it than describe it now.

I suppose the most notable thing of the day was going on a bike ride with Whitaker to the lightrail station and then biking all around downtown Portland.

Evan’s new “smart quote” code in logjam rocks, as does his rotating SVG throbber.

Reading Cryptonomicon lately.

What did you get Sandy for Mom's Day?

I bet Whitaker sent his mom a card reading, "Happy Mother's Day like whoa!"

I've read "Diamond Age," "Cryptonomicon," and "Snow Crash." I still need to get/read "The Big U" and "Zodiac", but I do have "In the Beginning Was the Command Line." It is available here.
The user name is "dl" and password "stuff". Enjoy! :)

Neal Stephenson, physics phd,...

and he'd rather be a writer ! = )

a good one at that.
Diamond Age and Snow Crash are excellent, too !

Long time ago while at the ACC at the UW, this guy comes up to me and asks, "what do you think about an online journal?" I say, "hmmm,... I don't know, "sounds" like a good idea." I keep wondering whatever happened to that guy.

Re: NEUTRAL QUOTES ARE EVIL

One of those pages makes a distinction between a right curly and a double hash mark indicating inches. Do you know anything about representing that in Unicode?

Re: NEUTRAL QUOTES ARE EVIL

Quotes/apostrophe:

’ U+2019: RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK
” U+201D: RIGHT DOUBLE QUOTATION MARK

Hash marks:

′U+2032: PRIME
″U+2033: DOUBLE PRIME

Re: NEUTRAL QUOTES ARE EVIL

Of course, Verdana doesn't actually have glyphs for the primes so it defaults to some nasty glyphs on my system that look more like quotes than Verdana’s quotes do. Oh, well.

It's pretty bike friendly, almost every street has a lane and the city and a few businesses distribute maps of the best streets to bike on as well as the few streets to avoid. Powell's is in kind of a weird area where downtown is turning into the The Pearl distcrict. Also, it's on the one really busy street Downtown (burnside) so that area is kind dof a bad eample.

Portlands more than just bike friendly, it's everything and everyone friendly. I live downtown, it's great.
