memcached, i hate mozilla lately [May. 27th, 2003|02:39 am]

Woke up this morning and went for another bike ride and run. It's so nice lately. I know I keep saying that, but I love it. I got so used to winter that I forgot about this warm, happy stuff.

My mom came over to work on my gardening. I tell her not to but she can't resist. She's addicted to gardening or something. (loco) But she drags my dad along, who is definitely not addicted to gardening. Poor dad.

I hung out with Dina in the evening. She made dinner, then we went to shoot pool and have some drinks, then to coffee and dessert. Fun stuff.

Wrote a decent-sized post about memcached in lj_dev. That's been consuming most my time lately, and it's totally worth it.

The ironic thing is that even though I'm making the site faster, I can't actually experience the speed increase because Mozilla is a piece of shit lately, eating 70-90% CPU randomly at times, usually after 10-15 minutes of starting it up.

I keep thinking: oh, damn, the site's still slow. Then I load a static text file and watch it slowly repaint and realize, "goddamn, it's just mozilla sucking." (this is both mozilla cvs and firebird...)

Anyway, sleep. Much to do tomorrow.

Re: Alt Er Native ?

Last time I used it I just about went into a seizure, my screen suddenly being filled with crap all over.

Re: Alt Er Native ?

All of it's disableable. You can make it look a lot like Mozilla if you like. I'd show you a screenshot of my very minimal Opera layout (complete with my own “tiny buttons” toolbar set), but I'm too lazy and I suspect you don't care anyway.

I hear Opera 7 has fixed a few of the things which annoyed me about 6, too. (But I paid for 6, so I'm not upgrading for a while)

Re: Alt Er Native ?

Yeah, it has some quirks, but most of the time it works faster than most other browsers. Then again, I'm not using it (on Windows) that much lately. You see...Opera has this little status bar at the bottom that shows the download speed of the page you're calling up and I get all annoyed when the speeds suck, on one site in particular :P

Anyhow...Nowadays I'm using Crazybrowser which is an enhanced IE add on/shell replacement thingy. And it's quite practical to work with.
But... I guess that won't help you out much since you're on Linux.

Assuming you're using a build of Mozilla with Xft, I'm having the same problem.. for some reason only on one of my computers, not my laptop with basically the same setup.

Good to know I'm not alone. Too bad we're the minority, though.

I sent them my details/versions. Hopefully it gets fixed soon. In the meantime, I guess I switch from using Bitstream Vera, which I'm guessing is triggering the xft problem.

Re:

What's weird is that I'm using Bitstream Vera on both computers, yet only one computer exhibits the problem. Oh well.
It's a shame, since they're such nice fonts.

Oh, you might also want to vote for that bug, and get other people who have that problem to vote for it. More votes = more likely to get developers' attentions.
