East Coast [Aug. 15th, 2003|09:02 am]
Brad Fitzpatrick
Dina and I are off to the east coast to visit New York, Boston, Atlantic City, and wherever else we happen to go.

I won't be replying to mail for a week.

And today was to be the day I finally got around to asking you questions about memcached...

1) Does it index via a btree?
2) Can it sync to disk?
3) Does it align itself up into pages?

Syncing to disk would defeat the object kinda! :)

Not really (and it should be an option). This means that you could set objects for infinite life and upon a shutdown/startup you would retain the objects.
Depending on how objects are set up into memory, aka maybe on pages, you could write out the needed pages as needed.

I see your point, but I think the idea right now is just to provide temporary storage in RAM on cheap machines.

The answer to your question would be “no, it doesn't”, but I can't say it never will, because it's nothing to do with me!

I have no idea about the other questions. You're probably better off sending mail to the memcached mailing list where there are other people who can answer you in Brad's absense.

1) no, a hash table
2) no
3) yes, i think (there's a slab allocator that splits up pages)

And ask these questions on the list:

Exactly! Let us know when you're hitting Philadelphia again, and you guys can join us in Ocean City, MD, if you are still in the area in a week.

Because I know that Brad's head will explode if he sees this comment in his inbox when he returns, I will reply to it for him.

Permanent accounts are superty-duper special and are only offered a few times each year. Sometimes they're just for sale. Other times there are contests to win them. You just have to read the communities that would post about this sort of thing ("news" would be a good place to start) and keep an eye out.
