FreeVote.com was my first web project back in like 1998, and where I learned so much about Perl, databases, users, communities, etc. Now look what it's become:

http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?FreeVote:
'FreeVote' isn't working at the moment. It hasn't been for over a month now. The main pages are up and running. However, ALL BOOTHS have been deleted. All booth owners have lost their booth(s) for good. Even those who had been updating their booths regularly. ALL CATEGORIES have been deleted. The 'Freevote.com' site will NOT ALLOW ANYONE to create a booth. Anyone wanting to send the 'FreeVote.com' staff an e-mail at: http://www.freevote.com/support.bml will find that it doesn't go through. The 'Latest News' page of 'FreeVote.com' at: http://www.freevote.com/news.bml has not been updated since 07/29/2002. 'FreeVote.com' was an excellent site, back in the day. Now it's just a waste of space. It should either be fixed up, sold on 'E-Bay' or shut down.
So if I ever stop working on LiveJournal, will that be its fate?

Go buy paid accounts! :-)

It's stranger than that. Just within the last day or two ago, there was a support request in which someone pointed out that the LiveJournal banner ad on the front page of FreeVote was no longer linking back to LiveJournal. It took quite a bit of brain stretching to remember what the association was. It surprised me that someone went to the trouble to report it.

My apologies. Unfortunately, I no longer have any control. I hope you aren't really disapointed....

So sad. Amazing it lasted this long considering how long ago it seemed like you abandoned it. And considering the fact that half the vote options were Britney Spears or Your Mom. I hope you poured a 40 on the curb for it... in mourning of course.

Actually, I'd spoken with them a few months back, (apparently, I was the only one with the superuser password... heh), and tried to convince them to not do this (it was a planned event), but obviously my plea fell on deaf ears. In any case, real (human) hits have been dropping steadily for a long time.

Not surprising, if nobody gives it love.

I would buy a paid account, Except it cost so much to get a US money order... 50 bucks canadian just for a yearly paid account.
