Phone Post: The Inaugural Phone Post [Nov. 10th, 2003|11:35 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick

“Hello LiveJournal friends! This is a phone post and, um, I don't really have anything to say! But I'll just keep talking. Why not? I kinda just want to see how big these files can get since we'll probably be hosting hundreds of thousands of them shortly here, but I think we have a couple hundred gig free — or 700 or so — so not a problem.

Blah ba-blah blah.

I wonder if people are gonna record mp3s, like over their crappy speakers over their cell phones and then the recording industry will be like “they have illegal music played through a cell phone going over VoIP reencoded as an MP3 in mono.” It's pretty much analog. Sounds like shit.

Uhh, bye!”

Oh, and by my "it's almost analog" comment: that's not to imply I think digital is better than analog. By no means. But the recording industry is concerned people will get "perfect copies" of things with all-digital technology. But if people use PhonePost to trade mp3s... well, you don't have a perfect copy anymore, not at all.

Adding Entries Using AOLbyPhone

AOLbyPhone is a service that allows you to access AOL communication services over the phone. Once you've signed up for the service, you simply dial the assigned number, proceed to Journals, and speak your entry. The entry will be there the next time you open your Journal.

Yup, guess so.

I'm just waiting to announce it tomorrow and wait for our one phonepost server to die. But it'll be interesting to watch.

I am sitting in an air port in Copenhagen and my mind is swimming at the idea of seeing where in my transatlantic flight that I can make posts :)

There is no way you are awake... just guess I will have to wait...

Heh, I'd like to see the MRTG graphs of that server (and your VoIP box) once the announcement is made.

We're going to let friends of the user transcribe it, and appear beside the entry.

Or something. Voting on best transcription? Gets hairy. Don't want to say, "First transcriber gets it!" because then you get quick, shitty transcriptions.

Which goes back to users voting on best transcription. Which is lame.

Or Wiki... anybody can edit transcription. Any friend?

It sounds like when I was testing our “voicemail” based on a knackered old modem and a knackered old linux box. I kept dialling it up and talking crap to it about nothing.

Most of them have less content than yours, though. Most featured lots of the word “blah”. Oh, and they're uncompressed because we only keep them for a few days and only load them over the LAN.

I guess speech compresses quite well.

speech-specific algorithms get really incredible compression. it's a shame we're stuck with mp3...

can't require users to install special software to listen to audio.

I think I shall collect these and start mp3.com/brad_fitz.

PLEASE say this is going to be a paid user feature? I imagine every 16 year old will have guest post on their free account every few milliseconds.

Hey Brad...

When will this be available to us?

Will it be an extra pay feature (like extra user pics)?

I have been using Audblog, but would much prefer to use this.

Much more amusing than, "Come here, Mr. Watson; I need you!"

Seriously, "Um, I don't really have anything to say" and "blah blah blah", is sorta indicative of the blogging phenomena in general. This is not intended as a slight, but simply an observation. Sure, there will always be occasional bits of true wisdom (and possibly even expressed in a grammatically correct fashion), but most content is simple stream-of-consciousness... and that's ok! My point is that audio is going to reinforce this route even more strongly, seeing as it will be far easier than typing.

My only wish is that there's some way to "read" the posts visually, perhaps with an automatic machine-generated transcript until the point that an LJ friend does this manually. I'm being selfish here; it's so much faster for me to read than to listen.

I'm also guessing that you'll follow up audio with pictures directly from cellphones to journals. :-)
