“Hello LiveJournal friends! This is a phone post and, um, I don't really have anything to say! But I'll just keep talking. Why not? I kinda just want to see how big these files can get since we'll probably be hosting hundreds of thousands of them shortly here, but I think we have a couple hundred gig free — or 700 or so — so not a problem.

Blah ba-blah blah.

I wonder if people are gonna record mp3s, like over their crappy speakers over their cell phones and then the recording industry will be like “they have illegal music played through a cell phone going over VoIP reencoded as an MP3 in mono.” It's pretty much analog. Sounds like shit.

Uhh, bye!”

It sounds like when I was testing our “voicemail” based on a knackered old modem and a knackered old linux box. I kept dialling it up and talking crap to it about nothing.

Most of them have less content than yours, though. Most featured lots of the word “blah”. Oh, and they're uncompressed because we only keep them for a few days and only load them over the LAN.

I guess speech compresses quite well.

speech-specific algorithms get really incredible compression. it's a shame we're stuck with mp3...

can't require users to install special software to listen to audio.
