CAPTCHA / HIP [Dec. 6th, 2003|10:19 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
Fun things to google for: CAPTCHA, HIP, BaffleText, Gimpy, EZ-Gimpy.

Spending a bit of time researching all this, working on LJ's human tests.

Good overview:

interesting

i've seen some of those used elsewhere, interestingly there was one that wrote two overlapped words in a caligraphic font... it was pretty hard to read...

(deep linking bad)

fwiw i came across these 2nd hand... the guy claimed that these weren't skip/worm peg/maim, which i find hard to believe...

There's not much you can do

Any system you implement can be circumvented by trolls or spammers pretty easily. They just write the code to automatedly do whatever they want to do, and then when you present them with whatever human-only signon they need, they pipe it to a client. Some human does it, and returns the info to the robot which continues with the process.

If your captcha takes 2 seconds to complete, the spammer can hire some high school students to do 18,000 of them for $50.
