Stupid federal government [Jan. 13th, 2004|06:37 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
My driver's license is soon expiring. Along with my renewal application was this beauty:
Disclosure of your Social Security Number is mandatory for all license applications.

On Jan. 1, 2004, the Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) will begin collecting Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from applicants for all original, renewal, and replacement driver licenses.

DMV will collect SSNs in order to comply with a federal law that makes the availability of federal welfare funds contingent upon states collecting SSNs to assist in the enforcement of child support laws.

All persons who have been issued a SSN by the United States Social Security Administration will be required to provide it to DMV. [ORS 25.785, 42 USC 405(c)(2)(C) and 666(a)(13)]. DMV will not issue, renew, or replace any permit or license unless this information is provided.

Applicants who have never been issued a SSN may sign a Statement of No Social Security Number form available from DMV. Customers who refuse to disclose their SSN or sign the statement will not be issued a license or permit.

DMV takes its responsibility to safeguard personal information very seriously. The SSN will not be displayed on the license or permit, or released on DMV records. Access to SSNs is allowed only to qualified government agencies.
Whereby "qualified" means "any", I presume.

I'll add this to my collection, along with the "TSA went through your luggage to protect you" notice.

It pisses me off that the federal government bribes the states with money.

I wish I could survive on mass transit alone. But even then I'd need a state-issued ID to be able to drink legally, which would probably also require giving my SSN out to DMV.

I'm actually kinda surprised by this: the government agencies can't join their databases and get this info on their own? (I'm sure it's technically illegal, but still....)

Heh.... I wonder if the DMV would take a proof of vasectomy certificate instead? "I can't have no children... so you don't need my SSN for child support laws!"

I have it on good authority that SSNs are not required for ID cards - just for Driver's Licenses.

Yeah, the wording says "license or permit", both of which are seperate from straight-up IDs.

i haven't gotten a new york state driver's license yet because they require you to have a social security card now, and i don't have one. apparently a passport is not adequate id.

i was gonna say "what are you, a crackhead?" - then i remembered you dont live in CA- hahah

yeah it's "scary"- but my SSN is in so many places these days it's ridiculous.

and with the SSN being the last decent legit form of ID around, isn't it kinda mandatory?

like- my license is suspended, i just go down to dmv and get a new one under a different name?
How do you currently authenticate yourself when you get a new drivers license?

You know, you could just sign the "statement of No Social Security Number" form. Yes, you'd be lying, but hell, then you wouldn't have to give them your social either, would you.

Get some money together and challenge this man, in the original acts that created social security, it was mandated that the number could only be used by the SSA, IRS, and by Federally chartered banks. To my knowledge, no one has changed that law.

Oregon was one of the last states to not require SSNs or fingerprinting. I suspect it will be overturned in a lawsuit sometime in the next 7.5 years.

Shit, i couldn't believe it. When i can back to NY i was just going to help the guy hold the suitcase up while he taped it to make sure it wouldn't fall apart. No, you can't touch anything after it has been "inspected". Besided making me automatically feel like a terrorist, i felt like i shouldn't try to be helpful or assist anyone. Seriously. A closed suitcase, what am i going to do?

Rub some plastic explosives on it that detonate at a given elevation, duh.

I didn't get no vasectomy. (I know you were probably joking, but I want to make this explicit. :P)

best billboard ever

About a decade ago, around Christmas time, right off the dual-Interstate corridor through the middle of Atlanta:
"Give the gift that keeps on giving. Give a vasectomy."
Wish I could remember who sponsored it.

Geez, Google only turns up one reference to that thing. (second to last message, with some competing variants)

Hmm, how about requiring you to carry a bumper sticker saying you only shoot blanks?

Why, actually, are SSNs supposed to be secret? Like biometrics and credit card numbers, they shouldn't be. It's just pervasive stupidity and broken security that makes them so.

This is just a rant, of course, not a recommendation to put your SSN in your LJ.

Scream that you're gay and blah-blah-blah about lawsuits and the ACLU. Make sure you wear something overly gay like a pink scarf around your neck and a beret.
