I did put it live...

http://www.livejournal.com/tools/sixdegrees.bml

Maybe what I meant was that it won't go on userinfo.bml by default at the top right away.

Is there a maximum path length (of 4?) or something?

Re: It's broken!!!

Yup! :P

Because more people know what "six degrees" means. Plus it'll probably be 6+ degree capable soon here.

You mean this??

The handy thing about lj_connect is that it has more options. But, that could easily be done on LJ as well so...

It's fun seeing key nexus people. Nearly all of my attempts for people like bob and phil and steve started with you as the first ping. I'm not silly in thinking that there isn't much use for this outside of novelty, right?

Well, things like "friends of friends" are pretty good trust metrics. I'm more likely to reply to a person in a big thread if the person asking a question is only a few hops away from me.

you are the kevin bacon or clint howard of the game though. At least any path I have had you have been in it. lol

So can you precompile the relationships so that when I look at someone I can see the paths?

This is fairly non-trivial to do with your userbase (you can build a join to do it). Now if I could get around to doing "CONNECT BY" this will become a lot easier (I am working on FRM stuff at the moment, so its going to have to wait).

It already does.

We'll have it on userinfo pages by default at the top.

It doesn't use CONNECT BY.

Cool stuff. Now this idea can actually be done!

(Kevin's The Boxer layout could really do with a comment “permalink” link.)

Kind of like LJ Connect... maybe you should just absorb that entirely. :)

Sorry, I haven't got around to reading it yet. You want to talk by phone sometime, perhaps?

Email me if so.

Have you ever created some code that would tell you the max distance on everyone in LJ? A kind of proof to the 6 deg rule, I guess.

I've always been curious if there are simultaneous groups of lj-ers that have a good mass but no connections to each other.
