Alcohol and programming [Jan. 30th, 2004|08:15 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
I find myself only able to work on boring projects with a tad bit of alcohol.

Enough to keep me smiling and amused at the rhythm of the keyboard. But not so much to get me distracted, incompetent, or unable to type.

Moderation, people, moderation!

I find caffeine to be more useful for getting boring stuff done. Every time I drink soda I can feel my energy level go up and my IQ drop, which is exactly what needs to happen in so many situations....

I can only tolerate system administration when drunk off my ass.

Re:

If you can actually see a cycle forming, then you've had way too much to drink.

Hey, check out the keyboard. It's like the keys are typing out a tune and I'm the conductor and I get to listen to it. Maestro!

I find I'm often more productive coding after a small amount of alcohol. Whether it improves "quality" is very much an open question, ...

Now the root of the jwz-incredibly-freakazoid-problems-from-hell-curse becomes apparent. On the other hand: it's probably a good thing that you own a bar.

stronger things than alcohol work better, as they don't tend to directly inteferere with quality.

Funny...I'm doing the same thing myself at the moment (only done it a handful of times before) and was just thinking to myself that it's a pretty good combo if you hit the right level.

One of the advantages of working at home, as opposed to working from the office, is the freedom to drink whenever you feel like it (and some code I've worked on in the past certainly demanded it). Although in your case, home or office may not make much of a difference ;-)

I can't type at all after even one drink. Its like the timing between my hands is totally off.

I know, boo-hoo for me. :)
